John McDonald Named ABS President

Wiernicki Named ABS Chairman

ABS announced a change in leadership with the election of Christopher J. Wiernicki, currently President and Chief Executive Officer of ABS, to the position of Chairman of ABS. This decision was made by the ABS Board of Directors, who voted at their April meeting to transfer the additional duties of Chairman to Wiernicki. With the expanding scope of classification in recent years, it is clear that the role of class will continue to change at an accelerated pace, and Wiernicki is optimistic about the organization's ability to meet this challenge.

ABS Elects Tony Nassif as Executive Vice President

ABS Elects Corporate Officers

The ABS Board of Directors has elected two senior executives of the classification society to the position of Corporate Officers. Mark A. McGrath currently serving in the appointed role of President and Chief Operating Officer of the ABS Pacific Division and Kenneth L. ABS Elects Pendexter Senior VP

ABS announced the election of Linwood (Lenny) Pendexter to the position of Corporate Senior Vice President and Chief Surveyor by the ABS Board of Directors at a recent meeting in New York. Pendexter has been an active advocate for maritime safety throughout his career. He currently serves as the classification society’s Chief Surveyor, overseeing a global network of more than 1,400 surveyors. He plans to continue stressing the importance  of safety within and outside the organization. “Safety is the heart and soul of ABS and the role ABS plays in the maritime industry,” he says.

ABS Announces Executive Appointments

The ABS Board of Directors announces executive appointments. Effective January 1, 2002 the following staff will assume new leadership positions: Robert J. Bauerle, Senior Vice President & Chief Financial Officer; Gary A. Latin, Senior Vice President & Chief Information Officer; Dr. Donald Liu, Executive Vice President & Chief Technology Officer; and Vincent F. ABS promoted James C. Card to Senior Vice President, Technology. Card will assume the overall management responsibilities of ABS' global technology and research team. The board also approved the election of William J. Lars Carlsson, president, Concordia Maritime AB; Douglas Wolcott of Wolcott Associates; and Peter George Goulandris of Capeside Steamship Company Ltd., were elected to the ABS Board of Directors, by the ABS Council, following yesterday's Annual Members Meeting of the classification society in New York. All three have a long association with the governance of ABS and have previously served on the classification society's Board.

Liu Wins SNAME David W. Taylor Medal

ABS Elects Wiernicki to Board

Christopher J. Wiernicki was elected to the ABS Board of Directors by the ABS Council following the Annual Meeting of the members of the international classification society. Wiernicki was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer of ABS on January 1. He is also an elected Corporate Officer of the society. Prior to his current appointment, Wiernicki served as President and COO of ABS Europe Ltd, the Division of the society responsible for activities throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Wiernicki has also served as Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for ABS and as President and Chief Operating Officer of ABSG Consulting Inc., an affiliate of ABS and the principal operating subsidiary of ABS Group of Companies, Inc.

ABS Elects Kurz And Kwok To Board Of Directors

Gerhard E. Kurz, president and CEO, Seabulk International, Inc. and Joseph Kwok, COO, Neptune Orient Lines Ltd. were elected to the ABS Board of Directors, by the ABS Council, following the recent Annual Members Meeting of the classification society in New York. Kurz is responsible for the revitalization of Seabulk International, Inc. (formerly Hvide Marine Inc.), and Kwok is COO of the NOL group of companies and also its CEO of chartering. He is responsible for the entire group's fleet operations. Also elected to the ABS Council at the Annual meeting were Choo Chian Beng, chairman and managing director, Keppel FELS; Mustafa A. Jalali, president and CEO, Aramco Services Company; Dr. Frank F.H. Lu, chairman, Taiwan Navigation Co.; and A.P. (Paul) Revere, president, Sea River Maritime.

Michael Carthew, President, Chevron Texaco Shipping and Dean Taylor, President and CEO, Tidewater Marine were elected to the ABS Board of Directors, by the ABS Council, following yesterday's Annual Members Meeting of the classification society in New York. General Dynamics announced the appointment of John F. "Dugan" Shipway, 60, as president of Bath Iron Works, reporting to Michael W. Toner, executive vice president of General Dynamics Marine Systems group. Shipway succeeds Allan C. Cameron, 57, who has announced his retirement. Cameron had been president of Bath Iron Works since 1996. Edwin W. Stephan, a founder and former longtime president and vice chairman of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., will retire from the Board of Directors following the company's May 20 annual meeting in Miami.

Somerville Elected CEO of ABS

Robert D. Somerville, currently President and Chief Operating Officer of ABS has been elected to the position of Chief Executive Officer by the ABS Board of Directors. These duties will be in addition to Mr. Somerville’s current responsibilities. The transfer of CEO responsibilities from ABS Chairman Frank J. Iarossi marks the first phase in a carefully planned leadership transition strategy. Mr Iarossi will continue as Chairman of the classification society until 1 May 2004 and remains Chairman and CEO of the ABS Group of Companies, an affiliate of ABS. The Board of Directors has also elected Robert E. Kramek, currently Senior Vice President and President, ABS Americas division to the position of Executive Vice President.
