Hapag-Lloyd executive board member Adolf Adrion is retiring at the end of the year after over 50 years with the company. “Adolf Adrion is leaving us as a shipping expert who put his excellent expertise and experience in the service of Hapag-Lloyd for more than 50 years and also assumed many honorary posts in the maritime industry. It was only fitting that he was accepted into the Maritime Hall of Fame this year,” declared Michael Behrendt, chairman of the executive board of Hapag-Lloyd AG, on the occasion of the official farewell, attended by close on 200 invited guests, including customers, partners and vendors from all over the world. After attending navigation school, Adolf Adrion started his career as a deck boy on a Hapag general cargo ship on August 14th 1957.

Organized by the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) and the North American Maritime Ministry Association (NAMMA), World Maritime Day Observance will be held in on October 23th at the Union League Club. This event will be the third World Maritime Day Observance held in the United States, which will be hosting the parallel World Maritime Day event in 2009. This year’s theme is “IMO: 60 years in the service of shipping”, which follows previous years’ focus on environmental issues. NAMEPA joins the North American Maritime Ministry Association in hosting the event which commences with a worship service at Church of our Saviour on , followed by a luncheon presentation of NAMMA’s annual Seafarer Salute and Joe Gerson Humanitarian Awards at the Union League Club.

Ulrich Kranich will be responsible on the Executive Board of Hapag-Lloyd AG for the global operations in future. He is taking over this role from Adolf Adrion who is retiring at the end of the year. Michael Behrendt will be responsible for the financial department in addition to serving as Executive Board Chairman (CEO). The Supervisory Board appointed Roland Kirch  Chief Representative (Generalbevollmächtigter). Günther Casjens, a member of the executive board of Hapag-Lloyd AG, is leaving the company at his own request with effect from March 1, 2004. Günther Casjens joined Hapag-Lloyd AG in 1974 and has been a member of the executive board since 1990. He has played a major part in the success of Hapag-Lloyd Container Line, which owes its present positioning to its consistent restructuring strategy aimed at ensuring decentralized decision-making, as well as its modern and homogeneous fleet and comprehensive IT solutions.

Hartmut Lühr (47), executive board chairman of VTG-Lehnkering AG, has been appointed manager of Hapag-Lloyd Container Line with effect from May 1st 2004. He will be responsible for Region Europe. Hartmut Lühr, who trained as a forwarding professional, gained experience in forwarding and liner shipping at Schenker and Maersk before being appointed head of global sea freight business at Schenker International AG (Essen) in 1997. In 1999, Lühr switched to Hapag-Lloyd Container Line, where he became head of marketing (Region Europe). At the beginning of 2001, he was appointed member of the executive board of VTG-Lehnkering AG responsible for the business unit rail and tank container logistics.

Its members are Hapag-Lloyd, MISC Berhad, Malaysia, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), Japan, and Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), Hong Kong. The four member lines have today extended their cooperation for a further term of ten years. Hapag-Lloyd has taken delivery of another mega containership with a capacity for 8,750 standard containers, the “Osaka Express”. The vessel was named in Hong Kong and will be deployed between Europe and Far East. “Over a third of containers carried in global transport is accounted for by China. All forecasts indicate continued stable growth. To be able always to provide adequate ship capacity for our customers in Asia, we have invested massively in recent years and will continue to do so in future,” emphasised Michael Behrendt, chairman of the executive board of Hapag-Lloyd AG, at the naming ceremony in Hong Kong. The naming was performed in Hong Kong by Catherine Desbois, wife of Gérard Desbois, CEO of JF Hillebrand Group AG.

Hapag-Lloyd, which has so far focused mainly on East-West services, is expanding its African network by starting a service to South Africa in mid-October. “The southern and west regions of Africa represent an attractive market for container transport with considerable development potential. We will thus be serving all five continents for the first time in our company’s history,” commented Adolf Adrion, executive board member of Hapag-Lloyd AG, with reference to the start of a liner service linking Northern Europe with ports in South and West Africa. A total of four ships capable of carrying approx. 1,200 standard containers (TEU) and equipped with 200 reefer plugs will be deployed in the new fortnightly service.

The board of CP Ships Limited has appointed Adolf Adrion new CEO effective 1st January 2006 following the completion of the acquisition of CP Ships by Hapag-Lloyd at the end of 2005 The new CFO will be Ulrich Kranich, effective 1st February 2006. Mr Adrion, also executive board member of Hapag-Lloyd AG, is retaining his previous responsibilities and is taking over from former CP Ships CEO Ray Miles, who stepped down from his post on 31st December 2005. Mr Kranich, also CFO of Hapag-Lloyd AG, will also retain his previous duties. He will succeed current CFO Ian Webber who will leave his post at the end of January. Adolf Adrion joined Hapag in 1957 and assumed various management functions. He was appointed a member of the executive board of Hapag-Lloyd AG in 2004.
