US' MARAD Announces Grants to Boost Supply Chain Efficiency

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) awarded nearly $12 million in grants to eight marine highway projects across the nation under the United States Marine Highway Program (USMHP). The funding will improve the movement of goods along our navigable waterways and expand existing waterborne freight services in Alaska, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin, which will strengthen supply chains and ultimately cut costs for consumers.“Our country has always relied on American waterways to get vital goods where they need to go,” said U.S.

Marcon to Market High-Speed SWATH Catamaran

Marcon International, Inc. of Coupeville, Washington is pleased to announce that they have been selected by the Matanuska-Susitna Borough in Alaska to market the SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) Expeditionary Craft ferry “Susitna” for sale. The “Susitna” was developed by Guido Perla & Associates of Seattle, Washington from a concept created by Lockheed Martin. The vessel is designed to operate as a ferry in the difficult Alaskan waters of Cook Inlet while being assessed by the U.S.

Alaska Shipbuilder Finishing Unique Ferry

A unique $68 million ferry – an icebreaking catamaran with a variable draft for landing -- is nearing completion at Alaska Ship and Dry Dock in Ketchikan Alaska, according to a report from the  Alaska Journal of Commerce. The ferry is scheduled for christening in January 2010, going into service the next year. The U.S. Navy will test the vessel, and turn it over to the Matanuska Susitna Borough. Anchorage and Mat-Su officials must still determine where the vessel will dock on the Anchorage side, however. The ferry, which will operate in Knik Arm waters between Anchorage and Port MacKenzie, is a catamaran variable draft watercraft that will have a moveable center section, according to the report It is designed to carry at least 20 cars and 100 passengers at up to 20 knots.
