Alfa Laval Taps Matthews to Head of UK & Ireland Marine Business

Alfa Laval announced it has appointed Tristan Matthews as the Head of Marine Division for the U.K. and Ireland, effective March 1, 2022.In the new role, Matthews will hold responsibility for driving partnerships with U.K. customers in the marine industry with a strong focus on sustainability, decarbonization, future fuels and alternative technologies.Matthews originally joined Alfa Laval in 2016 as a Marine Sales Engineer for Alfa Laval Marine Service. His preceding role was Business Unit Manager - Marine Capital Sales, UK & Ireland.

Alfa Laval PureBallast Deckhouse Solutions Gets DNV Nod

DNV issued a Type Approval Design Certificate for Alfa Laval PureBallast 3 Ex deckhouse solutions, the first design approval for the installation of ballast water treatment systems on the weather deck, a potentially attractive installation solution for many ship owners and shipyards alike.According to the manufactuers, placing ballast water treatment systems in a deck-mounted enclosure is necessary on many modern tankers due to lack of a pump room or other suitable internal space.

Alfa Laval Starts New PureBallast 3 Production Line in China

Alfa Laval will soon fire-up its new production line for Alfa Laval PureBallast 3 in Qingdao, China.According to Alfa Laval, the majority of PureBallast 3 installations occur at Asian shipyards, even when the vessels themselves are flagged in other regions. When the global wave of ballast water treatment system retrofits begins to subside in 2024, Asian shipyards will become even more dominant as the focus shifts to newbuilding. “We are growing with our customers, and the future of ballast water treatment installations is undoubtedly in Asia,” says Peter Sahlén, Head of Alfa Laval PureBallast.

Alfa Laval's PureBallast 2.0 BWMS Gains US Type Approval

The U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Center issued a ballast water management system (BWMS) type approval certificate to Alfa Laval Tumba AB after a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type approval application determined the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.Most owners of Alfa Laval’s second-generation ballast water treatment systems can now opt to continue operating in U.S. waters, even when their Alternate Management System (AMS) approval expires.The PureBallast 2.0 system generation, launched a decade ago, was developed before the USCG presented its testing regime.

Alfa Laval Inks BWTS Frame Agreements

Alfa Laval announced it has signed two frame agreements, running over the coming three years, for ballast water treatment systems. San Felice Completes Retrofit Ahead of Schedule

SeaQuest Shipmanagement announced that a client’s handysize bulk carrier completed her second special survey, dry-dock and Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) retrofit two days ahead of schedule and 7% below budget, despite the COVID-19 delays impacting many of China’s repair shipyards.The MV San Felice completed her retrofit on 5th March at COSCO Nantong under the supervision of a SeaQuest team, it said.According to a press release, the work list included: routine dry-dock works, hull blasting and painting, cargo holds blasting and painting, maintenance of the hatch cover hydraulic system, other minor deck and engine works, and the installation of an Alfa Laval PureBallast BWTS, including ballast lines modification, new electric cabling and remote control system.

Turkish Shipowners BWT Group Chooses Alfa Laval

Turkish Shipowners Ballast Water Treatment (BWT) Group has signed a fleet agreement for Alfa Laval PureBallast 3 systems, valued at approximately $22 million. Alfa Laval’s comprehensive offering in ballast water treatment, especially when it comes to service, was a key factor for the group.At the signing ceremony in Istanbul on July 4th, 2019, the around 50 members of the Turkish Shipowners BWT Group confirmed the decision to install PureBallast 3 systems on the group’s vessels.

Alfa Laval Wins Turkish Order

Swedish technology major Alfa Laval has signed an agreement worth SEK 210 million (USD 22.25 million), for the supply of Alfa Laval PureBallast systems to an alliance of Turkish shipowners.The orders will be booked in the Marine Separation & Heat Transfer Equipment unit of the Marine Division in the third quarter, while deliveries will be spread over a five-year period, from 2019 to 2024. The interest in signing fleet agreements for Alfa Laval’s PureBallast water treatment system has gradually increased since the beginning of 2018. Alfa Laval Wins USCG type Approval for Largest BWTS

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) presented a type approval certificate for the largest PureBallast 3 reactor size: 1500 m3/h, on 15 May.Customers can now select any PureBallast 3 system configuration for use in United States waters, said a press release.Launched in late 2018, the 1500 m3/h reactor for PureBallast 3 is optimized for 50% more flow than the former largest reactor size. Alfa Laval Q4 Results

Order intake for the Alfa Laval  Marine Division decreased in the fourth quarter compared to the previous quarter, mainly as a result of PureSOx coming in lower, following an extraordinary development in the preceding quarter.According to a stock exchange announcement, both offshore pumping systems and ballast water equipment reported significant growth compared to the third quarter, but not enough to compensate for the swing in PureSOx.Regarding the environmental portfolio of products, the market’s interest in PureSOx was on a continued good level as there was no change to the market’s view that the scrubber technology is a long-term financially attractive solution.Actual order intake was however lower after the extraordinary third quarter…

Alfa Laval Completes Tests for USCG Type Approval

Torm Orders BWTS for 47 Tankers

Alfa Laval Offers CBT for BWTS Ops

Lack of crew knowledge is not a valid reason for non-compliance in ballast water treatment. This is clear from statements made by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) and is also suggested by the IMO Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention guidelines. To help customers manage the challenge of keeping crews updated and trained, Alfa Laval is introducing Alfa Laval PureBallast 3 Computer-Based Training (CBT). Alfa Laval PureBallast 3 CBT is an online/offline training tool that serves as a complement to crew training on board or at training centers.
