WinGD Elected Joins LNG Marine Fuel Institute

Switzerland-based low-speed gas and diesel marine engines marine manufacturer Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD) has become a member of the LNG Marine Fuel Institute.WinGD, the company involved in the design and development of the two-stroke X-DF LNG engines,  is highly invested in the advancement of the shipping industry through LNG as fuel.More than 150 engines of the new WinGD X-DF type are ordered, under construction or in operations, said a press release from the company.WinGD’s engine design history dates back to the late 1800s when they were founded as the Sulzer Diesel Engine business. Their recent success in the LNG market is evidence of their commitment to looking ahead to the future.

Marcia Kull, vice president of marine sales for Volvo Penta of the Americas, has been selected by the Manufacturing Institute as one of the top women in U.S. manufacturing for 2016. Kull and the other honorees will be recognized at the fourth annual Women in Manufacturing STEP (Science, Technology, Engineering and Production) Ahead Award at a gala dinner April 21 in Washington, D.C. The STEP Ahead Awards celebrate those women who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in their careers in all levels of the manufacturing industry, from the factory floor to the C-suite.

Kohler Marine Sets Sail Aboard the Hermione

Kohler Marine, manufacturer of diesel and gasoline marine generators for a wide range of pleasure and commercial craft applications, announced its participation in the Hermione-Lafayette Voyage 2015. This historic voyage includes an Atlantic crossing as well as a tour of the eastern United States by an authentic reproduction of the Hermione, the 18th century frigate that carried the Marquis de Lafayette to America in 1780 with news that France was sending more than 5,000 troops to help fight the British. The modern-day Hermione – at 185 ft. tall, 216 ft. long and carrying a crew of 75 – was built to exacting specifications over a 17-year period in Rochefort, France. She departed Port des Barques in April and made landfall at Yorktown, Virginia on June 5, 2015.

Furuno's Ed Davis Passes Away

Ed Davis, an industry veteran and longtime employee at Furuno USA, Inc., passed away on April 30. Ed was Furuno USA’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Manager since September 1992, working closely with dealers who he not only called customers, but his friends. Prior to working at Furuno, Ed had his own marine manufacturer’s rep company, where he represented Datamarine International, Audiovox and Shakespeare Electronics. He first entered into the maritime industry in 1987 when he was hired as the Senior Product Planner/Buyer for Boat America Corp.

Onboard Drinking Water: Martek Marine Advises

Martek Marine, manufacturer of the drinking water testing kit, Drinksafe, is advising owners to ensure that they are aware of the requirements of port state control and flag state water testing requirements in response to the Maritime Labor Convention 2006. The introduction of MLC 2006 heralded a significant step forward for the quality of drinking water for ship’s crew defining that “frequent documented inspections” be performed which is why Martek developed Drinksafe to have more tests than any other kit on the market. Martek’s Sales Director, Steve Coulson, explains that “Drinksafe contains 1,800 tests, more than any other on the market providing a comparative cost per test that is approximately 50% lower than the closest comparative test kit.

Patterson Acquires Blackburn Marine

Manufacturer to Service Deck Fitting Product Line. Patterson Manufacturing, the marine equipment manufacturer based in Pittsburgh, today announced that it has acquired Blackburn Marine, a deck fitting manufacturer based in Canyon Lake, Texas. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. "We're pleased to be able to service Blackburn's excellent product lines," said David Grapes, CEO of Patterson. "Blackburn has been producing high-quality deck equipment for years, and their products are a fitting complement to our own. Patterson Manufacturing has been manufacturing winches, ratchet turnbuckles, tensors, and other marine equipment for more than 150 years.

Hyundai Heavy Industries Awards Contract To Wynn

Wynn Marine, manufacturer of heavy duty marine window wiper systems for ocean going vessels, has been granted a contract worth more than $100,000 from Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea. The contract calls for Wynn to supply wiper systems for two new RoPax Passenger Ships for Stena Line in Sweden. Wynn will supply more than 40 Pantograph wiper units, Type 1762 per ship. These will be controlled by the new Wynn Series 3000 Network wiper control system, which in turn will be used to control the wiper equipment as well as other equipment on the bridge such as heated windows and navigation lights.
