Three Vericor Power Systems' TF50 marine aeroderivative gas turbines have been selected to power the 118 Wallypower high-speed yacht being built by Intermarine Shipyard, Sarzana, Italy for Wally Yacht. This is Wally Yacht's first foray into high-speed power yachts, and the company's initial application of gas turbines. Wally Yacht, based in Monte Carlo, Monaco, is a world-renowned designer of high-speed sailing and power yachts.
The 118-ft. yacht will feature three TF50 gas turbines in a Combined Diesel Or Gas (CODOG) turbine configuration. Two TF50s will be used as side or "wing" engines, with one small auxiliary diesel engine connected to each wing engine. The diesels will provide for very slow maneuvering only. The wing engines will drive steerable waterjets while the center boost TF50 will drive a fixed waterjet. Total propulsion system output will be 16,800 hp/12,533 kW.
Cruising speed will be 60 knots, with a maximum speed of 70 knots. Following are the technical specifications for the 118 Wallypower yacht.
Detroit Diesel Corporation (DDC) packaged the CODOG system for the 118 Wallypower yacht. DDC, a Vericor Power Systems marine systems distributor, is part of MTU-Friedrichshafen, a division of DaimlerChrysler Powersystems.
The integrated system includes three TF50 gas turbines, controls, Maag gears, as well as fuel, lube, cooling and exhaust components. The following are the commercial marine specifications for the TF50 gas turbine.

Wesmar Provides a Smooth Ride
"In Florida, you can live and operate vessels without stabilizers and bow thrusters, but once you've had them you can't live and work without them. It spoils you," said Clark Coit, speaking about the smooth ride and control the WESMAR stabilizers and bow thrusters have brought to Florida based Flight Systems' 72-foot Pacemaker fiberglass Motoryacht Flight.
Clark Coit captains the Flight on its travels inside the intercoastal waterway between Miami and Philadelphia. They use the vessel primarily as a floating demonstrator to market the company's marine diesel engine monitor, a system that alerts boaters to engine problems before it is too late to avoid them. It's called the 'engine saver'." Coit is a licensed captain plus he works on product development for the company. His 15 years as a marine service manager and another 15 years running a boat yard have exposed him to most of the marine equipment out there. Four years ago he oversaw the installation of the WESMAR bow thruster and roll fin stabilizer.

Crowley Makes Exec Changes
Tom Crowley Jr., Chairman, President and CEO of Crowley Maritime Corporation and Richard du Moulin, president of Marine Transport Corporation (MTC), jointly announced that with the successful integration of MTC into Crowley, du Moulin will be resigning from MTC to pursue other business interests. Crowley acquired Weehawken, N.J.-based MTC in February 2001. Mark Filanowski, senior vice president and CFO of MTC, will also be leaving the company. Both resignations will take effect April 1, 2002. du Moulin had been Chairman of MTC since 1989 when he and Filanowski, utilizing their company Intrepid Shipping, acquired what was then NASDAQ-listed Marine Transport Lines, Inc. (MTL). In 1998, working in conjunction with Craig Stevenson, Chairman of the Board of Directors of OMI Corp., du Moulin and Filanowski merged MTL into OMI, followed immediately by a separation of OMI into a U.S.-flag, NASDAQ-listed company called Marine Transport Corporation and foreign-flagged, NYSE-listed company called new OMI. In the three years that followed MTC acquired the U.S.-flag tanker interests of Occidental Petroleum and Mormac Group, Inc., making MTC one of the largest U.S. ship operators. In February 2001, with the acquisition of MTC, Crowley became America's largest U.S.-flag shipping company. du Moulin has served in many industry leadership positions including Chairman of Intertanko, a tanker industry organization, and he serves on the boards of directors of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), the Seamen's Church Institute of New York/New Jersey, and the National Maritime Historical Society. Mark Filanowski is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Shoreline Mutual (Bermuda) Ltd., and is a member of ABS.

Bumgarner Joins Matson as VP
Marc D. Bumgarner has joined Matson Intermodal System in Oakbrook Terrace as vice president, International. In this position, Bumgarner will be responsible for Matson Intermodals' entire international business sector, including current customers and strategic growth opportunities.
Bumgarner comes to Matson Intermodal with over a decade of intermodal marketing experience. He has held director posts at Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, with an emphasis on sales, marketing and pricing. Most recently, he was vice president, pricing and schedules, for Webmodal, a business-to-business web-based platform for the purchase of freight transportation.
WESMAR Produces New Stabilizer Video
Western Marine Electronics (WESMAR) has released a new roll fin stabilizer video that goes into detail about stabilizer operation. Co-sponsored with one of WESMAR's local dealers (LaConner Maritime Service out of LaConner, Wash.) the eight-minute television segment was produced by Captain's Log: The Boating TV Show and was aired in late February on Western Washington stations.
The owners of the 56-ft. Selene, R-Turn, allowed the use of their boat to demonstrate the effect that the stabilizer has on vessels experiencing rough waters. With the stabilizers deactivated and then activated, viewers can see an obvious difference between the rolling vessel when chopping through rough water to the activated system offering a calm and comfortable ride.
Even more impressive, the R-Turn was hauled out so that viewers can see the fins and their location on the boat. While in the lift, she was rolled from port to starboard to demonstrate how the installed stabilizer works to counteract the rolling motion of the vessel.

Globalstar To Conduct Business As Usual
Globalstar announced that the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware has approved all of the company's first day motions, allowing
Globalstar to continue normal course operations and, with the support of the Company's service providers, further assuring uninterrupted telecommunications service for its customers.
The Court approval, which was granted on February 21, follows Globalstar's filing on February 15 of a voluntary petition under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code with the same court.
Globalstar will conduct business as usual with respect to customers, employees and most suppliers. This includes payment of employee salaries and benefits and payment for goods and services provided after February 15, 2002.
As a result, Globalstar will continue its work on finalizing and implementing its new business plan as outlined in last week's announcement, and the company expects to file a complete plan of restructuring with the Court in the coming weeks.
Candela Joins Paragon
Nick Candela, a Project Management Professional (PMP), has joined Paragon Engineering Services, Inc., of Houston as manager of Project Controls, responsible for staffing project controls personnel on Paragon projects both in Houston and worldwide.
Candela's immediate role involves enhancing Paragon's project controls systems through the development of standards and procedures for planning, scheduling, cost control, progress measurement and change management. Candela also is developing corresponding training programs for project managers, lead engineers and project controls personnel in these essential functions. Candela brings more than 20 years' experience leading capital project teams in global environments. Prior to joining Paragon, Candela served as project manager for Technip USA and Dow Chemical Company, among others.
For Technip USA, Candela created and implemented project execution plans, subcontract schedules and procurement strategies. He led the detailed design, procurement and construction management effort for the major revamp of a fired heater to increase capacity and incorporate new technology. He also led the development of feasibility studies to evaluate cost effectiveness, installed cost, technological viability and other options.
Laborde Diesel Resists Corrosion
Laborde Products, Inc. of Covington, La., have reportedly produced a diesel engine used in dive packages that resists corrosion. The corrosion resistant engine was packaged into diving compressors and successfully tested in real life applications. The Hatz Diesel corrosion resistant engine is dismantled in the Laborde Products facility in Covington. Many parts and sheet metal components are sent though a coating process while others are cleaned and primed. Several modifications to the engine are done in order to increase its safety based on the rugged environment it will be exposed to. Such modifications include the corrosion treatment, hand-crank emergency starting, and air-cooling.
The treated Hatz Diesel engine offers a range from 16 to 76 hp. It is available in 2, 3, and 4-cylinder units. Laborde Products also maintains a large inventory of parts for the treated engines and has an extensive service program. John P. Laborde, Chairman of Laborde Products, was the former CEO & Chairman of Tidewater Marine Services while other Laborde family members are active in operating supply boats and lift boats in the Oil and Gas Industry. Tracy Laborde, President, acquired 20-year old Star Power in 1998 and renamed it Laborde Products, Inc. Since then Laborde has moved the company closer to the commercial marine markets. Schat-Harding Launches Miami Service Center
Schat-Harding has opened a new service and sales center in Miami. Focused initially on improving service to the cruise industry, it will also coordinate sales and service for all ships using Florida's ports. George Suarez, a cruise industry veteran, is leading the new team, which is co-located with Unitor Ships Services
"We have sixty percent of the market share of lifeboats and davits for cruise ships," says Trygve Kjerpeseth, manager of the service department of Schat-Harding. "Miami and the Florida ports are at the core of the global cruise industry, so we need a team there to support our clients."
The Miami facility will be developed to include a technical team to provide quick response to service needs, a spare parts depot and a sales coordination center. "We have a facility in the USA, in Louisiana," explains Kjerpeseth. "But our strategic focus now is to be a lifetime partner to our clients."
