Marotta Receives GD Sub Conversion Contract

Tuesday, October 29, 2002
Marotta Scientific Controls, Inc. has been awarded a contract from General Dynamics, Electric Boat Division, for valves on two Ohio Class submarines that will be converted to multi-mission platforms, optimized for covert strike and special operations support. The contract value is $3.2 million with an option for another $3.3 Million for two additional conversions in 2003 & 2004. The U.S. Navy, in response to changes in post-Cold War strategy, will overhaul four of the Ohio Class Submarines, each of which currently carries 24 ballistic missiles. The conversion will replace the ballistic missiles with 154 Tomahawk guided missiles. Electric Boat has been awarded the contract to perform the design and long lead time material procurement for this conversion. Supporting systems for these missiles will incorporate Marotta's In-Line valve, an advanced, compact design proven in other critical submarine applications. There is one valve per Tomahawk missile. The valves will be designed, manufactured and tested at Marotta’s Montville, NJ facility. “We are very excited about this opportunity to build on our excellent relationship with Electric Boat, a premier customer”, said Mike Leahan, Chief Sales Officer at Marotta. “This award signifies our past cooperation and success with Electric Boat Division, and the commitment by Electric Boat and Marotta to design and develop state-of-the-art components for US submarines. The high flow, zero leakage and compact features of Marotta’s In-Line valves are ideally suited to submarine fluid-control applications”.
