Bodewig Awarded the 2002 Thomas Crowley Trophy

Monday, August 04, 2003
Jose Roberto Bodewig, Crowley's General Manager in El Salvador, was awarded the 2002 Thomas Crowley Trophy, Crowley Maritime Corporation's highest honor, at ceremonies held last week in New Orleans. Bodewig, who is based in San Salvador and works for the corporation's liner services business unit, is the second trophy recipient this year. The Thomas Crowley Trophy award honors employees with outstanding performance, whose dedication, leadership, initiative and productivity most clearly reflect those of the company's founder. The trophy, a limited edition, bronze sculpture depicting young Thomas Crowley as he ferried goods to and from ships on San Francisco Bay in the early 1890s, is a tribute to the founder of the company as well as the winners of the award. Tom Crowley, Jr., Chairman, President and CEO of Crowley Maritime Corporation, presented the award at the ceremony, which was attended by about 50 Crowley employees. Included in the group were previous Thomas Crowley Trophy recipients: Rinus Schepen, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Latin America Services; Jay Brickman, Vice President, Mexico, and Michael Hopkins, Vice President, Operations. "Jose Roberto is a very worthy recipient of this award because he has made many significant contributions to our company in Central America," said Crowley. "I am particularly impressed with his willingness to step across business lines to help our logistics unit become established and to foster its growth. He understands that while we are a diverse company offering many different services, we are still one company. He also has been willing to take on additional general manager responsibilities for other Central American countries during times of transition when his knowledge and expertise were needed." As a country general manager, Bodewig is responsible for the liner group's administration, sales & marketing, and operations in El Salvador where Crowley is the No. 1 carrier to and from the United States. And between 1997 and 1998, he not only served as general manager for his country, but for Guatemala as well. Bodewig joined Crowley in 1988 as assistant general manager of El Salvador, and was promoted to general manager in 1991. He also served as acting general manager of Guatemala for almost a year between 1997 and 1998. In 2001, Bodewig assumed additional duties as Director, Crowley Logistics El Salvador, S. A. de C.V., which is now Crowley Transportes El Salvador, S. A. de C.V.d
