The ‘A’ rated, 75 million GT North of England P&I club has updated its comprehensive guide to stowage and securing of non-bulk cargo items. Co-authored by Charles Bliault of international marine consultancy Brookes Bell, the 2nd edition of Cargo Stowage and Securing: A Guide to Good Practice* is set to play a significant role in helping shipowners reduce the rising tide high-value cargo claims. The new 112-page edition substantially updates and extends the original edition published in 2003, particularly with regard to stowage of containers. Other types of cargo covered in detail in the guide include break-bulk, steel, project cargo, ro-ro items and timber. The object of the publication is to increase seafarers’ knowledge of the forces action upon cargo items so they can better understand and plan for the stowage and securing arrangements necessary to keep cargoes safe during the voyage.
