Edmonds Reappointed as Chairman of Port or Houston Authority

Wednesday, July 03, 2002
James T. Edmonds, chairman of the Port of Houston Authority Commission, was reappointed to a second two-year term by a vote of the combined members of the Houston City Council and the Harris County Board of Commissioners. Edmonds, who joined the Port as a commissioner in October 1996 and was appointed chairman in June 2000, was recognized in the joint session for growing the Port's position as the Gulf of Mexico gateway, seizing new opportunities in emerging markets, expanding opportunities for small businesses, and operating in an environmentally friendly manner. "We're proud to be a partner with the city and county in developing projects and programs that will improve the quality of life in this region for future generations," Edmonds said. "Over the next two years, the commission will continue to strengthen and expand trade relationships on a North-South axis, as well as maintain our customer base in the rest of the world. We will also look for ways to increase the Port's cruise business, and help make the development of the Bayport Container and Cruise Terminal a reality." Port commissioners serve a two-year term without pay. "Jim Edmonds has shown strong leadership as chairman of the Port," said County Judge Robert Eckels. "We need that leadership more than ever as the Port continues to expand and work to attract new business." "The Port of Houston is one of the most successful ports in the world," said Mayor Lee P. Brown. "Under the guidance of Mr. Edmonds, the Port has made great progress, expanding its services and broadening its international reach. I am pleased with his commitment, and through his efforts, the Port of Houston will continue to grow and continue to develop new opportunities." Edmonds is president of Edmonds and Company, a firm dedicated to assisting clients with organizational matters, business development, marketing plans and regulatory compliance, primarily in the public sector. He also serves on the board of the Memorial Hermann Healthcare System and the board and executive committee of the Greater Houston Partnership.
