Norway's Bergesen DY Group has awarded international ships service provider Unitor a three year agreement, plus two one-year options, to supply marine products and services to its commercial fleet, which is one of the largest in the world. The agreement involves a wide range of products and services needed for onboard maintenance; fire, rescue and safety, as well as technical chemicals. Bergesen wished to consolidate on the supplier side and carried out a comparison of the major marine suppliers. Pricing, delivery capability, service level and use of information technology were included in the evaluation. Bergesen is heavily committed to working for a cleaner marine environment, so special attention was given to the environmental impact of marine technical and cleaning chemical products used onboard its vessels at sea. Overall, Unitor came out on top. On the environmental question, Unitor offers a wide selection of environmentally non-harmful marine chemical products that are as effective as the products they replace, while at the same time being competitive on price. Unitor's commitment to "green chemicals" is demonstrated with the recent ISO 14001 certification by Det Norske Veritas of its chemical production company, Kjemi-Service AS. Unitor's Vice-President for Sales & Marketing, David. J. Tandy, states that the agreement with Bergesen makes them one of Unitor's largest customers. "Serving Bergesen's fleet is demanding, but with our improved logistics capability, new global IT system and dedicated marine professionals around the world, we welcome the opportunity to prove that we are up to the challenge." Bergesen is the world's largest owners and operator of gas tankers between 8,000 and 86,000m³ and is the leader in the market for large gas tanker. The Group is also among the largest independent owners of ULCCs and VLCCs and has a significant position in the specialized market for large dry bulk vessels. Bergesen also has established tanker-based offshore solutions as a new business area.
