Continuing its support of students wishing to enter maritime fields, Crowley Maritime Corporation recently awarded Thomas B. Crowley, Sr.
Memorial Scholarships to Webb Institute students, Aurore Zuzick and Simmy Willemann.
Both young women were selected based on demonstrated leadership qualities, school and community involvement, interest in and dedication to the maritime industry and academic success. The scholarships will assist Zuzick, a junior, and Willemann, a sophomore, in continuing their education at the elite naval architecture and marine engineering school located in Glen Cove, N.Y.
Zuzick is involved in several campus activities and has distinguished herself as a leader at the Webb Institute. The junior, who grew up in Harwich in Cape Cod, Mass., is the 2009 graduating class president, vice-commodore of the Webb Yacht Club, secretary/treasurer of the student section of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, an honor council member at large and a member of the sailing team.
Zuzick completed three semesters at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as an architecture student before taking time off from school. For three years she lived and worked as a lift operator at a Colorado ski resort during the winters and at local boatyards in Cape Cod during the summers. She joined the Webb Institute in 2005.
Willemann, a native of Pleasantville, N.Y., joined the Webb Institute community with an interest in engineering, mathematics and design. While she had not been exposed to the ship building industry before joining the Webb Institute, she has quickly become fascinated with the maritime industry.
At Webb, Willemann has also showcased other diverse talents. As a classically trained violinist, she has joined the Webb Band and has participated in several music festivals. She has also founded several campus clubs, including a short story club, a film club and began running a student newspaper. She is a member of the WOOFS, the Webb Organization of Family Singers. During the past winter work session, she worked at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum's boatyard, restoring historic wooden vessels.
Willemann is currently out at sea as a cadet on a Stolt chemical tanker, as part of Webb's sea term.
