ABS Is Authorized By USCG

Thursday, July 13, 2000
The U.S. Coast Guard has authorized ABS to act on its behalf to issue the Document of Compliance (DOC) for U.S.-flag vessels transporting dangerous goods under SOLAS 74. ABS will hold technical reviews and confirm compliance of these vessels to the statutory requirements.

The relationship between the USCG and ABS is demonstrated by the Alternative Compliance Program (ACP) jointly developed with the USCG that allows ABS to perform work historically conducted by the regulatory body.

With ABS authorized to issue the dangerous goods DOC under SOLAS, 74, and review responsibilities under ACP, U.S.-flag operators in the international arena are experiencing a reduction in the regulatory burden placed upon them without compromising safety.

ABS has also achieved ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification from SGS International Certification Services. Known as the first organization to attain ISO 9000 Quality Management System certification, its new environmental standards apply to ABS' worldwide operations located in more than 60 countries. ABS also provides Safety, Quality and Environmental classification notations for vessels within its fleet. These standards are modeled upon the relevant ISM, ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 standards, supplemented by specific requirements applicable to marine operations.
