Caterpillar Product Line to Include Propulsion Engine

Friday, October 10, 2003
Caterpillar has announced the availability of the 3412D propulsion engine to the commercial marine market. The V-12, four-stroke-cycle-diesel engine offers higher horsepower output than its predecessor, the Cat® 3412C. The 3412D also meets customer demands for more power without compromising engine life. The 3412D is based on the proven reliable and durable 3412C platform with several significant improvements. The 3412D bore and stroke have been increased to 145 mm by 162 mm (5.7 in. by 6.4 in.) to provide 32.10 liters (1,959 cu. in.) displacement. The 3412D turbocharger and nozzle technology provides the following benefits: no visible smoke during steady-state operation and significantly less transient smoke. The 32-liter, twin-turbocharged 3412D engine meets US EPA emission requirements for 2004 and provides an excellent extension to the current Cat commercial marine product line. The 3412D is available in a variety of ratings, including both heat exchanger and keel-cooled ratings. An array of optional attachments, including protection and starting systems as well as engine and transmission options are available.
