Cargo Ship Fire
The crew of a Danish cargo ship that caught fire in the English Channel managed to put out the blaze, British
coastguards said on Wednesday. The captain of the 2,500-ton Sofie Theresa, with 13 crew on board, radioed for help when a fire broke out in the ship's engine room on Tuesday night, a coastguard spokesman said.
No one was injured in the blaze and the ship was not in any immediate danger, he said.
The ship, carrying a cargo of wax, was about 18 miles southeast of Beachy Head on England's southern coast when the fire broke out.
A rescue helicopter, a tug and coastguard vessels were dispatched to aid the ship, which was sailing to Port Coronne in France from Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The vessel's sister ship, Ellen Theresa, was also in the Channel and had stopped to lend assistance, the spokesman said.
