Cruise Ships to get Wastewater Upgrades

Thursday, August 24, 2006
Wastewater treatment systems on four popular cruise ships will receive a $9.2 million upgrade intended to enhance compliance with marine discharge regulations, according to a release issued by Hydroxyl Systems Inc. Hydroxyl, a Victoria-based manufacturer, was recently awarded contracts from Miami-based Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines to design and build four CleanSea environmental water process systems, said the report. The systems will combine Hydroxyl's bio-film carrier process for high-rate biodegradation with its dissolved air flotation equipment, both of which decrease space requirements and system lifecycle costs, Hydroxyl representatives said in the release.

The technology, which will be unique for the layout of each ship, will aid in the treatment of all black and grey water generated onboard Royal Caribbean's Brilliance of the Seas and Jewel of the Seas cruise ships, as well as Celebrity Cruises' Millennium and Constellation vessels, the release noted.
