His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark officially opened MAN B&W Diesel’s new five-star attraction, DieselHouse, a technical and cultural experience center dedicated to the diesel engine technology.
On May 18, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark officially opened MAN B&W Diesel’s new five-star attraction, DieselHouse, a technical and cultural experience center dedicated to the diesel engine technology.
The opening ceremony was witnessed by Flemming Hansen, Danish Minister for Tranport and Energy, as well as high-ranking representatives from MAN B&W Diesel’s licensees.
DieselHouse is situated on the site of the H.C. Ørsted power station, in the building housing the B&W diesel engine from 1932, which was used as late as 2003 to start up the East Danish power grid after a major collapse.
The centerpiece of the exhibition is the huge engine, which was the world’s largest diesel engine for 30 years. This huge engine is at the heart of DieselHouse, which houses every¬thing from the most modern interactive exhibitions to an extensive collection of ship and engine models from the production at the B&W shipyard and engineering works. The engine will be started up once a month during DieselHouse’s opening hours, so visitors can experience the sound and smell of a diesel engine.
From the entrance area, visitors are led to the engine deck where the theme is ‘From steam to diesel’ displaying a.o. B&W’s first engine from 1904 and Holeby Diesel’s first engine from 1910.
Each of the three exhibition floors has its own theme.
The first floor is ‘Diesel drives the world’ showing the significance of diesels in all types of shipping, and also in the electrification of Denmark.
The second floor shows the industrial development in Denmark illustrated by the history of B&W, which to many Danes is synonymous with the industrial revolution and workers’ history.
The third floor is the ‘Innovation’ section, displaying everything from basic principles of the diesel engine to the most advanced methods of development and calculation. This is also meant as an inspiration to children and students to learn about the diesel engine and hopefully choose a technical education.
