In order to meet the rising demand for classificatory services, Germanischer Lloyd (GL) has increased its staff and moved to a larger office in Mumbai. India's shipping industry in terms of order size now ranks eighth in the world; 18 months ago, it did not even figure in the top 20.
The new office is located in the emerging business district of Bandra, Kurla Complex, close to the old Mumbai Port and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) container terminal.
In India, Germanischer Lloyd employs 275 experts serving the maritime as well as the oil and gas industry and the expanding renewable energy market. In respect to the maritime industry, GL's service-portfolio includes comprehensive services for shipowners, shipyards, the maritime supply industry and ship design offices.
Dr Volkmar Wasmansdorff, GL's Head of Region Asia/Pacific said "Considerably strengthening our presence in India is an important step in our strategy of supporting our Indian and international clients even better and faster in the future. We took concrete action to support Indian customers, establishing Station Goa in 2008. Further stations will follow this year."
Worldwide, the Hamburg based classification society employs more than 5,300 engineers, surveyors, experts and administration staff. It maintains a global network of 208 offices in 77 countries. Shipowners, shipyards, the maritime supply industry and some 130 flag states are the primary customers of GL's ship classification activities.
