The importance of encouraging young marine engineers in their career development is fully recognised by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) and the Harris Pye Group. That is why the annual Harris Pye Sponsorship Award will be run in association with the Wales Branch of the IMarEST.
"The Wales Branch of IMarEST has traditionally presented awards to recognise excellence in achievement in branches of marine engineering, marine science subjects and in marine technology," explained Paul F.
Hancock, Chairman of the Awards Sub Committee of the Wales Branch IMarEST. "We are pleased to be able to develop this theme with the generous cooperation of the Welsh-based Harris Pye Group, an IMarEST Marine Partner and with a world-wide reputation in the field of marine maintenance, repair and contracting.”
The winning candidate will be a marine engineering student, marine engineer cadet or a junior engineer officer who is recommended to the Executive Committee of the Wales Branch IMarEST for consideration for the award. Nominations need to be received by the Wales Branch before 1 December, and should be sent to its Honorary Secretary David Gambles, CEng, FIMarEST, "Tawelfan", Pentrosfa Road, Llandrindod Wells LD1 5NL or at david-gambles@supanet.com.
"We look forward to receiving recommendations for the inaugural Award," said Paul Hancock. "Candidates must be of British nationality, but need not hold any grade of membership of IMarEST, although naturally we would encourage them to consider the advantages of membership."
"We are great believers in encouraging young blood within the industry, and so delighted to be involved with this Award," explained Chris David, Group Technical Director of the Harris Pye Group. "It will be in the form of ongoing, complementary training on one of our on-going contracts deemed to be appropriate for the winning candidate. The Award winner will be with us for up to 10-14 days and will be given tasks under guidance of our project Contract Manager aimed at broadening the candidate's knowledge of the project being undertaken. He or she will be expected to produce a detailed technical report on the project for presentation to the Wales Branch IMarEST Executive Committee.”
"The location of the project could be any of our foreign stations, in the UK or within Europe," he added. "Naturally it will be determined by the suitability of projects being undertaken at the time, and the timing of the take-up of the Award will be subject to agreement with the winner's employers and the Executive Committee of the Wales Branch IMarEST. Our Group will pay for all travel, accommodation and living costs and will make sure that the candidate is properly insured for the duration of their time with us."
