M/V Ever Deluxe Assists In Rescue Of F/V LUCKY I

Monday, September 29, 2003
The EVER DELUXE, a container vessel of the Evergreen Line fleet and captained by Captain Wen-Yau Hwang, assisted the U.S. Coast Guard in the rescue of the fishing vessel LUCKY I. The fishing vessel has been off the coast of San Francisco, CA without engine power for a week. The incident took place September 25. The USCGC STEADFAST, a 210-foot medium endurance cutter, arrived on-scene and made attempts to repair the engine and generator with no success. Placing the safety of fellow mariners ahead of commercial considerations, Evergreen postponed the labor order at Oakland, and proceeded to lend assistance. The STEADFAST towed the vessel to San Francisco eventually relinquishing the tow to USCGC TERN, an 87-foot patrol boat. "The cooperation the crew of EVER DELUXE extended to the United States Coast Guard demonstrates the Evergreen commitment to maritime safety and upholds the highest traditions of mariners," said Thomas Chen, president of Evergreen America Corporation, U. S. Agents for Evergreen.
