The Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration is searching for a new superintendent for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at .

The person who fills this job will have a profound impact on the Merchant Marine Academy and upon the maritime industry worldwide.  The superintendent of the academy must have the ability to educate and train individuals to be highly qualified licensed merchant marine officers inspired to sail on vessels of the .

The incumbent in this position is responsible for the development of scholastic standards which encourage the intellectual, professional growth and physical well-being of midshipmen and effective and economical operation of the Academy facilities.  The position reports to the Maritime Administrator, and is an Executive Service position in the government.

The successful applicant will possess academic credentials of a sufficiently high order to direct and improve, as necessary, the educational program. The successful applicant must possess the following qualifications:

·        Demonstrated knowledge and experience of organizational functioning, gained either through corporate, high level government positions or military background;

·        Demonstrated high level public outreach ability on complex issues, as evidenced by past experience with industry, Congressional, community and/or media groups who may have held divergent views.

·         Demonstrated knowledge and experience, as evidenced by a financial budgetary or operational oversight role in a private or public entity.
