Navy League Cites NY Council for Excellence

Monday, July 01, 2002
The Navy League of the United States announced the winners of its Council awards for their outstanding activities and operations in 2001. Awards were presented by National President Timothy O. Fanning at the organization’s National Centennial Convention being held in New York City at the Marriott Marquis, June 28-July2. Eleven councils were designated “Outstanding Councils” for their extraordinary activities and operations in 2001. Ten Councils earned citations as “Meritorious Councils” and five councils were accorded “Honorable Mention” status. President Timothy O. Fanning said that judging for top council awards “was, as always, a formidable challenge this year. It is difficult to select the very best of the best. The Navy League’s Centennial theme “Citizens in Support of the Sea Services’ is carried out on a daily basis by the accomplishments of our 330 councils and the many community education programs they have established and supported.” Navy league councils adopt ships and units, set up ship libraries, send care packages to sea service personnel, host events honoring active military personnel, and offer a wide range of direct assistance to sea service families. Navy League Councils are also instrumental in coordinating ship commissioning ceremonies, hosting Fleet Week activities, giving scholarships, and presenting special awards, which recognize outstanding civilian and military leadership. The awards are presented to councils that have demonstrated exceptional achievement. Councils were judged on membership recruitment and retention, community education, youth activities, general council activities, legislative education and public affairs activities, and support for sea-service recruiting efforts.
