Navy Secretary Receives Philadelphia Award

Donald C. Winter, Secretary of the Navy, will receive the Commodore John Barry Distinguished Citizen Award at the annual Navy League Dinner to be held on August 28. Drexelbrook in Drexel Hill. Dr. Winter, who holds a doctorate in physics from the University of Michigan, is the 74th Secretary of the Navy, and is responsible for an annual budget in excess of $125b and almost 900,000 people. Prior to joining the administration of President George W. Bush, he served as a corporate vice president and president of Northrop Grumman's Mission Systems sector.

Previously, Dr. Winter was president and CEO of TRW Systems; vice president and deputy general manager for group development of TRW's Space & Electronics business; and vice president and general manager of the defense systems division of TRW. The Award is given annually to an individual whose character and service has significantly contributed to the mission and goals of the Navy League. Commodore Barry was a Revolutionary War hero from Philadelphia who received in 1797 the first commission in the newly revived U.S. Navy by President George Washington. Barry's personal papers are archived at the Independence Seaport Museum, which plans a joint display with the Navy League. The Commodore Barry Bridge of the Delaware River Port Authority bears his name.
