New Gasoline Engines from Volvo Penta

Wednesday, August 29, 2001
Volvo Penta is developing the power output of its marine gasoline engines with up to an additional 20 hp. With power ratings of up to 320 hp, the upgraded gasoline engines become faster and more reliable - while at the same time beginning this year they are being delivered in the classic Volvo Penta red color. Most of Volvo Penta's 6- and 8-cylinder gasoline engines are being further developed for the 2002 model year, which results in substantial power increases for most of the product program. In conjunction with the introduction of the upgraded engines in the market this autumn, the designations are also being changed. The new designation for the Gi engines will be GXi and the GS engines will be GL. The power increases for each engine are as follows: Designations Cylinders Power Increase 4.3 GXi V6 225 + 20 hp 5.0 GXi V8 270 + 20 hp 5.7 GL V8 260 + 10 hp 5.7 GXi V8 320 + 5 hp For many years, the above engines were delivered to customers in black, but when this year's new models are introduced all of Volvo Penta's gasoline engines will be delivered in the red color. The engines will also feature a new cover, creating a partially new design. All new models will be equipped with overheating alarms for exhaust gases. The alarm warns the driver of high exhaust temperatures thereby contributing to safer operation of the boat. All seawater-cooled engines are now connected to freshwater flushing systems to reduce internal corrosion. Remote oil filters are also standard on all fuel-injected gasoline engines. Synthetic oil and a new type of platinum tipped plugs will result in a lower maintenance requirement for the customer.
