This merger of technologies allows for detection of objects by their infrared heat signatures day or night. When thermal barriers such as high humidity or heavy fog limit IR capability at night, the Gen III light intensifier produces day-like pictures with only
starlight needed for illumination. The IR emitting searchlight aides the Generation III intensifier with a semi-covert long-range light intended for systems using magnification for further detection distances. When there is excess light for the intensifier, the ultra sensitive low light camera gives clear images with little light needed for night navigation and security. This is particularly useful when shoreline, platform, or harbor lighting can give a blooming effect from light intensification devices.
