Northrop Grumman Awarded Contract for Sub Work

Tuesday, February 11, 2003
Northrop Grumman Corporation announced that it received a contract award for dry docking work on the nuclear-powered submarine USS Minneapolis-St. Paul (SSN 708). The work will be performed at the Newport News sector in Newport News, Va. The contract, valued at approximately $23 million, will include replacement of the tail shaft, removal and overhaul of the main and auxiliary sea valves, inspection and repair of all external and internal tanks, miscellaneous repairs to torpedo systems and inspection and repairs to the sail, pressure and non-pressure hulls. It has been nearly 10 years since Newport News was awarded a contract for this type of availability.

"This contract will help re-establish Newport News as another key resource to the Navy for large complex submarine fleet maintenance work in addition to the Tiger Team work that we already perform," says Becky Stewart, program director, Surface Ship and Submarine Fleet Maintenance. The ship is scheduled to arrive at Newport News in mid-February and the performance completion is scheduled for mid-June.
