Odfjell, Lloyd’s Register in Green Passport Deal

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

The Norwegian company Odfjell Management AS has contracted Lloyd’s Register EMEA to certify 18 ships with the Green Passport and to offer staff training on the issues around certification.

Staff training at Odfjell’s headquarters in Bergen, Norway, will start on May 19, 2009 before the completion of the Green Passport inventories. Further training will follow in Asia as Lloyd’s Register EMEA fulfils its first ever significant contract with the Norwegian parcel tanker operator.

The Green Passport is essentially an inventory of all the materials onboard a ship that may be hazardous to people’s health or the environment, and that require careful handling or special awareness. The inventory accompanies the ship throughout its operational life. It is reviewed by Lloyd’s Register EMEA on an annual basis and re-certified every five years. At the end of the ship’s life, the Inventory of Hazardous Materials helps ship recycling yards to formulate safe and environmentally friendly means of decommissioning the ship.

The new International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships is due for adoption in May 2009. The Convention will require ships to have an approved and verified Inventory of Hazardous Materials also known as the Green Passport.

Leif Gunnar Sandvik, Account Manager, Lloyd’s Register EMEA in Bergen said “Our Green Passport Approval Team in Southampton will oversee the initial approvals of the inventories, and the onboard verification surveys will involve several local Lloyd’s Register Group offices worldwide.”
