Robotics Technology Dramatically Speeds Construction
Precision Shapes of Virginia (PSOV) has set November 1 as its target date for the start of operations using two giant robotic milling and grinding arms to machine plugs and molds for boat construction. Founded by naval architect and marine engineer Donald L. Blount, the company will be able to produce the forms in a quarter of the time normally required.
The technology will allow PSOV to construct single-part molds and plugs larger than previous technology has allowed. The two robotic arms will enable the making of one-piece forms as long as 80 ft., as wide as 15 ft., and as tall as 9.5 ft. The seven-axis arms have movement capabilities that permit the manufacture of three-dimensional shapes requiring most unusual cuts.
