Swedish Club Extends BRM Training to Pakistan

The Swedish Club has licensed the Wallem Maritime Training Center Karachi (WMTC Karachi) for Bridge Resource Management (BRM) training. It is the seventh BRM training center to be licensed by the Club. Wallem Shipmanagement now operates three BRM training facilities licensed by the Club, the others being WMTC Moscow and WMTC Mumbai. The licensing of the training center in Karachi will enable Wallem to extend BRM training to its officers and engineers in Pakistan. The BRM courses presented at WMTC Karachi will be managed by Captain Syed Mahmud Raza Rizvi, who recently trained as a Workshop Leader at the SAS Flight Academy, Stockholm. The Pakistan center’s first BRM course is scheduled for early August. Martin Hernqvist, The Swedish Club's Loss Prevention Manager, says: "WMTC Karachi is the third training center to be licensed by the Club to conduct BRM training during the past nine months. In February, we licensed Wallem's facility in Moscow and we approved Southfield Agencies of Manila last September. "Wallem recognizes the special value BRM training brings to its crews, by improving inter-personal communication skills and promoting behavior which contributes to safety at sea. Many significant maritime accidents are caused by human error, often the result of a breakdown in communication between individuals, preoccupation with minor technical problems, poor task delegation and a failure to recognize dangerous deviations from standard operating procedures. "BRM training focuses on the crucial human factors, such as teamwork, communication skills, attitude, decision-making and an acute awareness of potentially hazardous behaviour. We believe that all owners and operators would benefit from providing their deck officers and engineers with BRM training." The other training centers licensed by the Club to conduct the BRM Course are: The Swedish Club Training Center, Piraeus; Anglo Eastern Maritime Training Center, Mumbai; and PHILCAMSAT in Manila.
