USCG Extends Policy for Carriage of Navigation Equipment

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

July 14, 2004

The U.S. Coast Guard is extending indefinitely its policy for resolving conflicts between its own regulations and recent amendments to the SOLAS Convention. Various amendments to SOLAS entered into force on July 1, 2002 and impact carriage of navigation equipment for ships on international voyages. Until the Coast Guard aligns its regulations for U.S. ships to these amendments, this policy will apply to U.S. ships on international voyages. When an amendment to SOLAS chapter V and a provision in Coast Guard regulations address the same navigational safety concern and when applying both would result in unnecessary duplication, the Coast Guard will accept the provision in chapter V as meeting the corresponding Coast Guard regulation.
