Wallem Attains OHSAS 18001

In the wake of the SARS virus outbreak in Asia, Wallem Shipmanagement Ltd., Hong Kong have shown foresight and commitment in implementing international standards to manage safety & quality assurance risks, by adding yet another standard to their already impressive list of attainment of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. Wallem announced that they had completed the implementation of OHSAS 18001 – the comprehensive Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) management system specification – designed to help organisations formulate occupational health & safety policies and objectives which safeguard all employees and the environment from harmful incidents. OHSAS 18001 is also compatible with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 allowing for easy integration and simultaneous auditing. Last year (2002) Wallem Shipmanagement gained certification of ISO14001 (Environmental System Standard) and in April of this year, they upgraded their ISO9002 : 1994 to ISO9001/2000 (Quality System Standard – Ship Management and Marine Operations). The attainment of 18001 has now given them an effective management system covering all aspects of health & safety for its employees, both at sea and ashore, an environmental standard and an overall management system. All measured against and found compliant with a best practice standard – issued by a third party accreditation body/registrar (in this instance DNV). Certification of these various standards, show the industry and the company’s employees that the company actively protects and has a stake in the welfare of its employees and the environment.
