Washburn & Doughty Win Contract

Monday, July 16, 2001
Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. of East Boothbay, Maine signed a contract to design and build a 72 x 20 x 10.5 ft/ Offshore Motor Vessel (Hull 76) for Hempstead Navigation Service LLC. The vessel, which is designed for long distance travel, will have a steel hull (5/16" shell) and an aluminum deckhouse. Hull 76 will feature a Caterpillar 3406E main engine rated at 450 hp at 1,800 rpm. The vessel is designed to travel at 10 knots and will use a Twin Disc 5114 close-coupled reverse gear with a 4.1 to 1 reduction ratio, a 4-in. Aquamet 22 shaft, and a 48-in. five-blade NiBrAl propeller. Two generators, a Northern Light model 984 K (32 kW) and a Northern Light model M844K (16 kW), will fulfill the vessel's electric power requirements. The vessel will be equipped with an American Bow Thruster 16-in. TRAC series thruster hydraulically powered from the 32 kW generator. Controls will be installed at the pilothouse and bridge wing stations. In addition, the bow thruster's hydraulic system will be designed to chain drive the main propeller shaft and thereby create an emergency take home system. The vessel is designed with a 6,000 gallon fuel oil capacity for a 4,000 nm cruising range; 170 gallon lube oil capacity; 200 gallon dirty oil capacity; and a 1,200 gallon potable water capacity supplemented by a 600 gpd reverse osmosis water maker.
