FEED Completed for Delfin FLNG Vessel

Deal for Floating LNG Powerplant in China

National Grid contract for Wood Group GTS

Wood Group GTS has secured a $3.2 million contract from National Grid to provide gas turbine icon™ governor control system upgrades to nine Rolls-Royce Avon gas turbines, including an additional governor to act as a rotational spare. The upgrades will be fitted to gas turbines operating at compressor stations located in Cambridge, Diss, Chelmsford and Huntingdon in the United Kingdom. The icon governor control system regulates fuel flow into the gas turbine, providing stable operation across the turbine performance range from no load to full load conditions. This upgrade will address equipment obsolescence, enabling the continued operation of all four compressor stations and providing increased flexibility to ensure the essential flow of natural gas across the UK network.

Rolls-Royce Installs 36MW Gas Turbine

The Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine enclosure, shrink wrapped for protection, arrives alongside HMS Queen Elizabeth, prior to installation at Babcock’s Rosyth yard in Scotland.

Rolls-Royce installed the first MT30 gas turbine into the Royal Navy’s new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, at Babcock’s Rosyth shipyard in Scotland. The MT30, at 36 MW (around 50,000 hp), is reported by the company to be the world’s most powerful marine gas turbine. Two MT30s will be installed in each ship and will provide two thirds of the 109 MW needed to power the 65,000 ton ships. The MT30s are installed as part of a Gas Turbine Alternator (GTA) which also includes an alternator and gas turbine enclosure, weighing a total of 120 tonnes.

US Navy Seeks to Transform Gas Turbine Technology

Naval Research Laboritory (NRL) scientists study the complex physics of Rotating Detonation Engines (RDE's). With its strong dependence on gas-turbine engines for propulsion, the U.S. Navy is always looking for ways to improve the fuel consumption of these engines. At the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), scientists are studying the complex physics of Rotating Detonation Engines (RDEs) which offer the potential for high dollar savings by way of reduced fuel consumption in gas-turbine engines, explains Dr. Kazhikathra Kailasanath, who heads NRL's Laboratories for Computational Physics and Fluid Dynamics. Many Navy aircraft use gas-turbine engines for propulsion, with the Navy's gas-turbine engines being fundamentally similar to engines used in commercial airplanes.

Rolls-Royce Gas Turbine Get Certification

The Rolls-Royce MT30 marine gas turbine has completed a major development milestone, receiving certification from a leading verification agency. The gas turbine has received DNV (Det Norske Veritas) design approval, certifying the engine at 36MW to DNV's rules for classification of High Speed, Light Craft and Naval Surface Vessels. ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) certification test running, which will satisfy all United States Navy requirements, has also been started and will be completed in mid-2004. The MT30 has been selected to power the Integrated Power System (IPS) Engineering Development Model (EDM) for the US Navy's DD(X) multimission destroyer programme. This order marks the company's entry into the US Navy large gas turbine market.

GE Tapped to Power Japanese Destroyer

GE Marine will supply Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries, Co., Ltd. (IHI), Tokyo, Japan with four LM2500 gas turbines. The engines will be placed into propulsion modules by IHI to power the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force’s (JMSDF) 15DDG AEGIS destroyer. The destroyer will be built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd.’s Nagasaki, Japan shipyard. The 15DDG will be the sixth AEGIS destroyer built for the JMSDF using GE’s LM2500 gas turbines. In fact, this order brings the total of LM2500s in the JMSDF’s fleet to 61, including Murasame-class and Takanami-class destroyers that are powered by this gas turbine. In addition, 27 GE LM500 gas turbines power six JMSDF hydrofoils and three monohull boats.

Rolls-Royce’s Trent 30 Turbine Is Latest Innovation

The new Rolls-Royce Marine Trent 30 gas turbine is designed to bring technologically driven Trent aero engine innovation to the cruise industry. Available for service in either mechanical or electrical genset applications for both commercial and naval markets, the Trent 30 will be available for delivery in 2004. Boasting a power rating of 36 MW and cost effective, the turbine is ideal for cruise liners, fast ferries and LNG vessels. The Trent 30 offers propulsion system designers optimum flexibility as it can replace the need for two turbines, thus saving on space and reducing operating and ownership costs. Measuring 8.9 x 3.5 x 4.3 m, it is lightweight and compact, its total package including enclosure and auxiliaries, weighing less than 26,000 kg.

GE to Supply IHI with LM2500 Gas Turbines

GE Transportation's marine gas turbine business announced it will supply Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries, Co. Ltd. (IHI) with four GE LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbines. The engines will power the first of a new class of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's (JMSDF) helicopter-carrying destroyers. The first vessel will be know as the 16DDH, and it is anticipated that at least one additional DDH destroyer will be built in the coming years. The 13,500-ton DDH destroyer will use two propulsion trains, each consisting of two LM2500s in a COmbined Gas turbine And Gas turbine configuration (COGAG), driving a propeller through a gearbox. The engines will each provide 25,000 shaft horsepower.

Izar And Rolls-Royce Plan High Speed Cargo Vessel

Spanish shipbuilder and designer IZAR and Rolls-Royce announced plans for a new European High Speed Cargo Vessel which is intended to be a cost-effective short-sea shipping alternative to road transport in Europe. The monohull EHSCV is powered by two Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbines and Rolls-Royce Kamewa waterjets. The baseline design enables 124 trailers to be carried at a service speed of 37 knots and is intended to be economically competitive with road transport on routes above 300 nautical miles. The design meets the needs of ship owners wishing to develop fleet plans in line with the European Union's Marco Polo program, which is designed to give financial support to projects which improve the environmental performance of Europe's freight transport system.

The New “Class” of Celebrity’s Class
