Mississippi Governor to Speak at Christening

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour will join Navy Adm. William J. Fallon, commander, U.S. Fleet Forces command as principal speakers for the christening of the Aegis-guided missile destroyer Halsey (DDG 97). Ship Systems on Saturday, January 17. Other ceremony participants will include Navy Rear Adm. Charles S. Hamilton, program executive officer for ships; Navy Capt. Bella, supervisor of shipbuilding, conversion and repair, Gulf Coast; Dr. Philip A. Operations. with the name "Halsey," to honor Fleet Adm. New Aegis Destroyer Christened

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour cheers as ship sponsors Heidi Cooke Halsey, Alice Spruance Talbot and Anne Halsey-Smith simultaneously smash ceremonial bottles of champagne across the bow of the Aegis guided missile destroyer DDG 97, officially christening the ship "Halsey." USS Halsey Commissioned

The USS HALSEY DDG 97 was commissioning at Coronado Naval Station, San Diego, California on July 30,2005. Senator of Arizona, the Honorable John McCain was the Principal Speaker. Program Executive Officer for Ships, Rear Admiral Charles S. Hamilton ll, US Navy was the keynote speaker. Among the many attendance of the distinguished guests on the platform, retired Rear Admiral Wayne E. Meyer ( Father of Aegis ) was present for the 73rd consecutive times on the commissioning occasions. This “ world class “ warship was built in Pascagoula, Mississippi by men and women of Northrop Grumman Ship System. USS HALSEY is the 47th of the Aleigh Burke Class guided missile destroyer and the 73rd Aegis warship of the line.

Austal Hosts Keel Laying Ceremony For LCS

Following the official opening of the new ship construction facility last November, Austal USA today hosted a traditional US Navy keel-laying ceremony to signify the start of construction on the Navy’s new breed of surface combatant, the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS). Whilst the ceremonies have been updated to reflect modern ship construction techniques, Navy tradition dictates that each new ship for the service be honoured on four historic ceremonial occasions: keel-laying, christening (or launching), commissioning and decommissioning. The object of today’s ceremony is a component in the modular construction arrangement that will form part of a 127 metre aluminium trimaran capable of providing high speeds, multi-mission capability and superior aviation operations.
