Bahrain’s Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard Co (ASRY) has joined forces with UK-based power generation packaging specialist Centrax, to form a joint venture company ASRY-Centrax Ltd, to design and build Power Barges – essentially floating electricity generating power stations. ASRY has designed the barges itself, and will build them on its two large slipways. The initial design is the TPB125 Power Barge, a 125MWe unit based on a standard barge design and outfitted with a pair of Rolls-Royce Trent 60 gas turbines, selling for between $100 to $125 million based on final outfitting factors such as security systems, and the need for amenities such as night vision equipment and helidecks, for example.

2007 was another successful year for the Naval Sea Systems Command’s (NAVSEA) Engineering for Reduced Maintenance (EFRM) team, with the warfighter-focused program making great strides in reducing shipboard maintenance burdens. Working under NAVSEA’s Naval Systems Engineering Directorate, the EFRM team seeks to streamline costly and time-consuming maintenance procedures in the Fleet. ITT Corporation has received a contract to provide night vision equipment to the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard through 2012. The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division, Crane, Ind., awarded the indefinite delivery indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract for submersible AN/PVS-14 night vision monocular devices. The contract has a potential total value of $37 million. Work for the contract will be performed at ITT Night Vision, based in Roanoke, Va. ITT's AN/PVS-14 is a monocular Generation (Gen) 3 device, which allows the user to adjust the gain control for improved clarity of vision in varying light conditions. The unit can be handheld, head-mounted, weapon-mounted or adapted to a camera or camcorder. The submersible version will be provided on this contract.

ITT Corporation, the leading manufacturer of military night vision equipment for the U.S. Armed Forces, has admitted sending classified materials overseas and will pay a $100 million penalty, Assistant Attorney General for the National Security Division Kenneth L. Wainstein and U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia John L. Brownlee announced today, along with the Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The corporation will pay a total monetary penalty of $100 million, one of the largest penalties ever paid in a criminal case. ITT Corporation will also be the first major defense contractor convicted of a criminal violation of the Arms Export Control Act. According to the written plea agreement to be filed in U.S.

With Iraq alone costing about $8 billion a month, another infusion of funds will be needed next spring. Opinion polls show the war continues to be unpopular with voters, but even Democratic opponents of the war generally embrace the Pentagon measure, since it provides funding for body armor and other support for U.S. troops overseas. The House passed the Pentagon appropriations bill Tuesday night on a 394-22 vote, and the Senate could clear the bill for President Bush . The House-Senate compromise bill provides $378 billion for core Pentagon programs, about a 5 percent increase, though not quite as much as Bush requested. The $70 billion for Iraq and Afghanistan is a down payment on war costs the White House has estimated will hit $110 billion for the budget year beginning Oct.
