Baltimore's Alternate Shipping Channels Not Deep Enough, Maersk Says

The Baltimore port's alternate shipping channels are not deep enough to accommodate the oceangoing container vessels that Maersk and other carriers use, the Danish shipping group said in a statement on Wednesday.A container vessel chartered by Maersk collided with a major bridge in the U.S. port of Baltimore's harbor last month, causing the structure to collapse.

Maryland Governor Urges Congress to Fund Bridge Rebuild

With efforts underway to clean up thousands of tons of steel debris from the collapsed bridge in Baltimore's harbor, Maryland Governor Wes Moore on Sunday urged Republicans to work with Democrats to approve the federal funding needed for rebuilding the bridge and to get the port economy back on its feet.Baltimore's Francis Scott Key bridge collapsed early on Tuesday morning, killing six road workers, when a container ship nearly the size of the Eiffel Tower lost power and crashed into a support pylon.

The Maryland Port Administration (MPA), Port of Baltimore, officially joined the Council for Dredging and Marine Construction Safety (CDMCS), a national unified safety voice for the dredging and marine construction industry.The Port of Baltimore is one of the busiest seaports in the United States, handling every type of cargo at its public and private terminals. Currently, Baltimore is in the execution phase of more than $200 million in marine construction, dredging and infrastructure upgrades at Seagirt, Dundalk and Locust Point Marine Terminals.

The end of the 2019 saw some unprecedented funding measure pass through Congress and signed into law by President Trump. The Gulf and East Coast have continued to receive significant funding to help deepen and widen navigational channels and gateways. One of the projects passed into law included the Gulf Coast Regional Demonstration Project. Some of the ports receiving funding and underway include Mobile, Baltimore, Houston, Port Everglades and Norfolk. All these projects funded by Congress draw a direct correlation to the expanded Panama Canal.

GLDD Wins $141Mln Across Several Awards

The American company providing construction services in dredging and land reclamation, Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company (GLDD) announced the receipt of several major dredging awards totaling $141 million.The North America's dredging industry leader said in a release that  awarded work includes: Jacksonville Deepening Contract B Option (Capital Deepening, Florida, $96.6 million); Baltimore Harbor (Maintenance, Maryland, $38.4 million) and Boston Harbor (Maintenance, Massachusetts, $5.6 million).The base scope for the Jacksonville Deepening Contract B was won in 2018 and the option work is a continuation of channel deepening an additional 2.5 miles upriver.

Too much speed and too steep of an angle of approach resulted in the May 8, 2016, allision involving the cruise ship Carnival Pride in which more than $2 million in property damage occurred, according to a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) marine accident brief released Tuesday. No fatalities, injuries or damage to the environment were reported in connection with the Carnival Pride’s allision with the pier at Cruise Maryland Terminal, South Locust Point, Baltimore Harbor, Md.

The sight of Fort McHenrys flag and the British withdrawing from Baltimore the next morning inspires Francis Scott Key to write the Star Spangled Banner. 1847 - During the Mexican-American War, Chapultepec - the gateway to Mexico City - is successfully stormed by Marines.

Mariner's 'Command Bridge' Helps Keep Baltimore Celebration Safe

The Mariner Group informs that it augmented the security efforts of Maryland's Natural Resources Police and other federal, state and local agencies for Baltimore's recent Star-Spangled Spectacular and Sailabration. Mariner provided CommandBridge situation awareness support to the Incident Command Center at Coast Guard Sector Baltimore. The CommandBridge displays and on-site staff helped maintain safety and security during several high-profile maritime events, including a Parade of Ships into Baltimore Harbor and the Navy's Blue Angels air show performances. "The Maryland Natural Resources Police partnered with CommandBridge to create a command and control system for managing emergencies and significant planned events," said Col. George Johnson, superintendent of the Maryland NRP.

US Department of Defense informs of placement of contracts for Chesapeake Bay dredging, dry-docking of USS Pearl Harbor, and charter of surface escort vessels. Maintenance dredging will take place in various channel sections in the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland.
