New Initiatives Probe Thruster Interaction Effects

MARIN has a long history in research into the performance of thrusters during Dynamic Positioning (DP) operations. Research on ducted propellers started in the late 1960s (Oosterveld) but a lot of today’s knowledge on thruster interaction effects was developed in the late 1980s and early 1990s (Nienhuis). As a result of the application of DP systems on many different vessels, there is continued interest in this subject. Today, newly developed tools enable more detailed measurements and computer simulations of the thrusters on DP vessels.

A Valuable Tool for Flow Measurements

Stereo Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is an advanced measuring technique for obtaining 3D velocity information in a plane. PIV can be used to investigate the spatial structure of a flow by efficiently measuring in multiple planes. It is an important tool for the experimental validation of CFD calculations and for obtaining flow field information. This information can then be used for appendage or propeller design for instance. This technique is based on the measurement of the displacement Dx of particles in a target plane between two successive light pulses with a time delay.

MS&D 2009 Hamburg

The latest surveillance, defence and security equipment is presented by the 60 exhibitors at MS&D 2009, the international conference and exhibition on Maritime Security & Defence (MS&D), to be held at the Hamburg Fair site from 30 September to 2 October 2009. The exhibits include sophisticated optical and acoustic sensors, which have substantially improved the automated monitoring and control technology of security and defence equipment and systems. Thus the exhibiting companies, most of them from the exclusive circle of defence system manufacturers, are contributing to the protection of international shipping. A trend at MS&D 2009 is unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) which fly in fully automated mode and can be used for surveillance. The exhibits by Diehl BGT Defence GmbH & Co.

More Sets of Eyes

Closed circuit television (CCTV) has become a common system on most supply boats serving the Gulf of Mexico. One company that makes extensive use of CCTV on its vessels is Hornbeck Offshore Services, Mandeville, La. This is a serious commitment as the company is in the process of adding a complete CCTV system to six 220-ft. supply vessels recently purchased from the Candy Fleet, Morgan City, La. "We use CCTV to accomplish several things," said George McCoy, vessel group manager with Hornbeck. "They are used to document loads, to monitor high risk operations, monitor restricted areas, promote safe work practices and to record any unusual incidents that occur aboard or around our vessels," McCoy added. The CCTV system used on board large vessels such as the 240-ft.

Marine Communications:Sending Screws, Pistons and Lube Oil via Satellite

At the Rudolf Schepers shipping line based in Elsfleth in the Oldenburg region, shipping is a business with traditions. While the owners' grandfather sailed on inland waterways, 50 years ago their capacity was expanded by the addition of some coastal motor vessels up to 150 tons. Since the 70s, the company's core competence has become the worldwide chartering of container ships to big shippers like Maersk or CSAV. The cargo space is made available and the ships have been subjected to technical refits and the crews increased. Together with the Heinrich Schepers company within the same line, the family concern now operates 12 container vessels of 1,100 to 2,500 TEU. "Our ships are everywhere. Belotti Handling Reinvents The Reach Stacker Machine

Belotti Handling S.p.A., which invented the Reach Stacker machine for container handling in 1969, offers today a totally new and innovative unit with automated and sophisticated systems. The new machine is the result of a collaboration between Belotti and Pininfarina, with design and the most advanced know how studied and developed by the University of Robotics in Genoa. The new machine is already provided by five international patents, which ensure originality and innovation in this particular range of rubber tired cranes. In fact, the unit is provided by a container self docking system (SDS) developed jointly with the University of Robotics in Genoa, which is well-regarded for the design of independent robots and marine working arms.
