Bestobell Marine has secured two new contracts with Chinese shipyards.

The first contract will see the company supply cryogenic valves to the Guangzhou Shipyard International, China for use in a new ferry’s LNG fuel gas system. The second contract involves Bestobell Marine producing its small cryogenic miniature needle globe valves for the Hudong shipyard in Shanghai, where they will be installed on four 174K Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Carriers.

It is the first time Bestobell Marine’s cryogenic valves will be fitted within a fuel gas system for a Chinese-built project, making it another milestone for the Sheffield-based company. By operating on LNG, the vessel will significantly reduce its sulphur and nitrogen oxide emissions, as well as lowering carbon dioxide output. This will ensure compliance with the latest International Maritime Organisation Tier III regulations, which restrict nitrogen oxide emissions from marine diesel engines.

The ferry will be built for Swedish owner Rederi AB Gotland and once completed, will sail between the Swedish mainland and the island of Gotland.

Bestobell Marine’s second contract requires it to provide valves for LNG Carriers built at Hudong for joint owners Teekay, CNOOC Energy Technology, The Centre for Liquefied Natural Gas and the BW Group, one of the world’s leading maritime organisations. Bestobell Marine had already secured orders to supply its cryogenic globe and check valves and unique FLIV (Float Level Isolation Valves) for these ships.

Bestobell Marine is committed to promoting the use of LNG as a fuel because of its “clean burn” properties that can help reduce harmful emissions produced by marine vessels.

Duncan Gaskin, Sales Director for Bestobell Marine, stated, “China is where we are focusing a lot of effort with our local partner Healthlead Ltd, to ensure we are seen as the number one supplier for marine grade cryogenic globe valves, both for LNG Carrier cargo valves and LNG fuel system valves.

Gaskin continued, “There are some exciting developments taking place in China relating to the use of LNG and the marine sector will see a significant upturn in the use of this low-emission fuel. Our cryogenic globe valves are the ideal solution for companies looking to develop fuel gas systems and for shipyards looking to enter the LNG Carrier new build sector.

He added, “Our proven leak-free design of over 10 years with true fire-safe properties provides end users with the reassurance they need when purchasing cryogenic valves. We estimate there are over 35,000 Bestobell Marine cryogenic globe valves already fitted on ships, which is an amazing record to have and again provides reassurance to end users of the quality of our products.”
