DNV GL: Classification More Relevant than Ever

In an increasingly complex, fast changing, and challenging market, the role of the classification society is more relevant than ever, said Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO of DNV GL – Maritime, at a press conference ahead of Posidonia trade fair in Athens. Class enables innovation in shipbuilding, guides owners and operators through a demanding regulatory landscape, and helps the industry tackle cyber-crime, he underlined.Leading off the press conference, DNV GL Group President & CEO Remi Eriksen explained that two megatrends are impacting the maritime industry: decarbonization and digitalization.

Sanmar Built Vessel Join Svitzer’s Fleet

Sanmar Shipyard Tuzla has built M/T Svitzer Amstel (Boğaçay XII) will join Svitzer’s fleet at the Port of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The vessel measures 24.4m x 11.25m with a 60 tonne bollard pull derived from a pair of 3512 C Caterpillar engines, each developing 1,765kW at 1,800 rev/min. connected to Rolls Royce azimuthing thrusters of US 205 FP type. Sanmar has delivered two sister vessels to Svitzer in 2014 named as Bogacay II and Svitzer Tyne. Last month Svitzer signed a newbuilding contract with Sanmar Shipyard in Turkey for the construction of six vessels, with delivery of the first one to be expected in Q4 2016. The vessels are being built to fulfil for Svitzer’s commitment to current and upcoming new contracts in various terminal towage markets.

Aliança Shipyard has acquired FORAN 3D Viewers for project control, construction and maintenance tasks. Strategically located in an area of 54,000 sqm in Niterói, alongside Baía de Guanabara (Brazil), Aliança Shipyard has experience in construction of high technology vessels as AHTS (Anchor Handling Tug Supply), MPSV (Multipurpose Platform Supply Vessel), PSV (Platform Supply Vessel), OSRV (Oil Spill Response Vessel). The company said it works together with world-renowned designers as Rolls Royce Marine and Ulstein.

Arctic OSV Delivered 4 Months

Arctech Helsinki Shipyard, joint-venture, that is 50/50 owned by STX Finland and United Shipbuilding Corporation, is building two identical offshore icebreaking supply vessels for Russias largest shipping group Sovcomflot (SCF Group), the leading company in the world specializing in ice-management and shipping in harsh environments. The vessels will supply Exxon Neftegas Limited's platform in Arkutun-Dagi oil and gas field in Sakhalin area, Far East Russia. The development of the field is proceeding at good pace, why also the icebreaking offshore supply vessels are needed in the area. The main task of the Arctic offshore vessels is to supply the oil and gas production platform and to protect it from the ice. Both vessels measure 99.9 m in length and 21.7 m in breadth.

Bharati Shipyard Booked to Capacity

Bharati Shipyard, the second largest private sector shipbuilder in India, is going slow on fresh orders for building ships since the company is booked to capacity till 2011. The company, promoted by two former naval architects - P C Kapoor and Vijay Kumar - has seen orders pouring in from France, Norway and other leading maritime nations. Bharati reportedly will also shortly announce a joint venture with Apeejay Surendra Group for a large shipyard on the east coast. This, however, will be for bigger cargo ships. The four shipyards Bharati owns in Ratnagiri, Goa, Kolkata and Mangalore will continue to build high technology vessels such as offshore vessels. [Source: http://sify.com]

BV Naval Rules Benefit Military Ship Designs

Bureau Veritas has joined forces with military ships designers and builders to update and complete its Rules for Classification of Naval Ships. The new rules, which build on Bureau Veritas’s experience with high-technology vessels and materials, will provide designers and builders with a safe, pragmatic, robust and rational framework for military ships of all sizes. Yves Le Gal, head of military developments at BV’s Paris head office, says, “Naval concerns about the safety of military ship in peacetime have prompted the development of naval classification rules. This new edition, dated September 2006, benefits from experience gained during the recent new construction programmes for the French navy.

International classification society Bureau Veritas has joined forces with yacht designers and builders to completely reengineer its Rules for Classification and Certification of Yachts. The new Rules, launched today, build on Bureau Veritas' experience with high-technology vessels and materials to provide designers and builders with a safe, pragmatic, robust and rationale framework for yachts of all sizes. Etienne Thiberge, Head the hull department of the Marine Technical Division for Bureau Veritas, says, "The explosive growth in the mega yacht market poses enormous safety challenges. Setting up a safety framework for high tech pleasure vessels, especially those over 24m LOA but under 500 gt requires a careful balancing of technical freedom with pragmatic limits on safe outcomes.

Exmar to Use Iranian Carriers to Ship LNG

Reuters has reported that Iranian shipbuilder SADRA said it would build 10 ships for Belgium's Exmar to export Iranian liquefied natural gas (LNG) although Iran's efforts to produce the fuel are deadlocked. The total value of the 10 high-technology vessels would be $2.4b, Iran's Industry Minister Alireza Tahmasbi told state television. He told the ISNA students news agency that SADRA might sign a another deal for four more ships. High-value energy deals with Iran put companies at risk from U.S. sanctions. Washington accuses Iran of seeking nuclear arms, a charge Tehran denies. Iran has lacked the investment and technology to develop its reserves for export.
