Isle of Man Ship Registry’s QUALSHIP 21 Status Confirmed by USCG

The Isle of Man Ship Registry has retained its place within the United States Coast Guard’s QUALSHIP 21 program, designed to recognize foreign-flagged vessels that maintain the highest safety and quality standards.Isle of Man Ship Registry director Cameron Mitchell said continued inclusion in the scheme through to July 2021 was great news for the registry and its clients, representing further independent verification of the quality of the Manx fleet.Entry into the program is based on data gathered during Port State Control inspections in the United States.

Shipping directly employs over 640,000 workers at sea and on shore, and supports over 1.4 million workers through indirect and induced employment, said European Community Shipowners' Associations (ECSA).These professionals possess a wealth of maritime knowledge, skills and heritage unique in the world. Denmarks Maintains QUALSHIP 21 Status

The QUALSHIP 21 program (United States Coast Guard's Quality Shipping for the 21st Century Program) has existed since 2001, helping improve safety of shipping by identifying high-quality ships and thus promoting ship quality standards.Denmark has once again demonstrated high standards for quality shipping resulting in international recognition through the QUALSHIP 21 program."Danish shipping is quality shipping. Safety and growth are the hallmarks of quality shipping, and therefore I am pleased that Danish shipping continues to live up to these high standards," says Andreas Nordseth, Director General of the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA).The requirements for QUALSHIP 21 are higher than ever.

MOL Promotes Green Award Program

Japanese shipping giant Mitsui O.S.K. MOL Techno-Trade in Green Initiative

Japanese shipping giant Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) announced that its group company MOL Techno-Trade has joined a Green Award Program aimed at promoting high-quality shipping.The program is run by the nonprofit Green Award Foundation, which was established with the objectives of protecting the marine environment and enhancing safe operation.The program aims to improve the quality of vessels and mariners and protect the marine environment by certifying vessels for excellence in safety and low environmental impact. Companies that share the foundation's goals support them by providing incentives.Eleven MOL Group-operated vessels have earned certification from the Green Award Foundation.

Denmark, India Sign Maritime Pact

The Danish Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs and the Indian Ministry of Shipping have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen the cooperation in the maritime sector between the two countries.With the conclusion of this agreement, the two countries’ mutual commitment and interest in cooperating to ensure good conditions for the maritime sector is underlined.Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs, Rasmus Jarlov said: “India is a major growth economy that plays a key role in the global maritime sector. India Okays Marititme MoU with Denmark

Coles joins Wallem as CEO

Frank Coles joins Wallem Group as CEO at the end of October 2018.

Following the purchase of Transas by Wärtsilä, Transas' ubiquitous CEO Frank Coles will depart the newly merged company, finding a spot on top as the CEO of Wallem Group. Denmark, Mexico Sign Maritime MoU

Denmark's Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs, Brian Mikkelsen and Mexico’s Secretary of Communications and Transportation, Gerado Ruiz Esparza, have signed a maritime MoU to increase the two countries’ cooperation on maritime topics. Maritime topics such as digitalization and green shipping. The MoU was signed during the visit of the Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs to Mexico. The maritime MoU is part of the strategic partnership agreement that Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and the Mexican president signed in April 2017. The partnership solidifies the economic and political ties between the countries, and with the new MoU there will a further strengthening of the maritime cooperation.

New Ships’ Routing Systems in Kattegat

The IMO NCSR Sub-Committee has approved the Danish Maritime Authority’s proposal for new ships’ routeing measures, thereby bringing new routes in the Skagerrak and the Kattegat one step closer and enhancing safety of navigation. Because of developments in shipping, the ships transiting these waters today are larger than those for which the routes were originally designed. Approx. 7,000 ships transit the Kattegat each year, the majority of which are deep-draught ships heading for or coming from the Baltic Sea. Consequently, there is a need to extend existing ships’ routes, thereby making it easier to keep the traffic separate in accordance with the largest water depths.

International Focus on Protectionism

The Consultative Shipping Group (CSG) is meeting in the United Kingdom during the London International Shipping Week (LISW) to discuss the challenges facing global shipping markets, said a press statement from Danish Maritime Authority (DMA). Director-General of DMA Andreas Nordseth, has chaired the CSG since 2009 while the DMA itself is secretariat for the group. The CSG members hail from 18 European, Asian countries plus Canada - all sharing the values and principles of open and unhindered shipping markets. The CSG will meet Monday and Tuesday to focus on free trade, barriers, market access for shipping as well as how best to develop and implement environmental and climate regulation. The underlying principles are fair competition and quality shipping.

Sunday is the Day of the Seafarer

On Sunday, 25 June, seafarers are in focus. This date has been dedicated to seafarers as United Nations' international day in honour of the world's seafarers, the Day of the Seafarer. This year’s theme “Seafarers matters” accents the importance of the seafarers efforts and underlines that the seafarers are a vital element in shipping. A press statement from Danish Maritime Authority said that you can follow and make your own contribution to the day on various social media under #SeafarersMatter and #DayoftheSeafarer. The date will also be celebrated around the world, and in Denmark inter alia the Fisheries and Maritime Museum in Esbjerg will be hosting a number of events and activities from 10 am.

Digitalisation to Boost Future Shipping

As a prelude to the 'e-Navigation Underway’ conference, which will take place during the next two days, South Korea's Director General for Maritime Affairs, Mr. Kwang-Youl Park, visited the DMA to talk about cooperation on digitalisation and e-Navigation. Director General Andreas Nordseth from the Danish Maritime Authority said: "We are pleased about our cooperation with South Korea. In 2014, Denmark and South Korea concluded a Memorandum of Understanding to develop e-Navigation. The conference 'e-Navigation Underway' has helped place e-Navigation and digitalisation of shipping on the international agenda. The conference will be held in three places around the world, i.e. in Denmark, the USA and South Korea.

DMA Cutting Back Special Rules for Danish Shippers

A benchmark analysis shows that Denmark has 33 special requirements for ships flying the Danish flag, a number which the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) seeks to scale back as it aims to create a more favorable environment for shippers. “Denmark is characterized by quality shipping and Deloitte’s benchmark analysis confirms that Denmark is a good place to conduct maritime business,” said DMA Director General Andreas Nordseth. “We have been alleviating burdens for a long time and we have already abolished four of the 33 special requirements identified in the analysis. The benchmark analysis was carried out by Deloitte on the basis of a decision by the Danish Government’s Implementation Committee.

Novoship Celebrates 50th Anniversary

On January 19-20, 2017 Novorossiysk Shipping Company (Novoship), a subsidiary of SCF Group, hosted special events dedicated to the company’s 50th anniversary. Danish Quality Shipping Promoted by Inspection Campaigns Abroad

Every year, the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) performs flag State inspections of ships abroad that are flying the Danish flag. In 2017, the number of control inspections will be increased to 60. Just before the 2016 Christmas and New Year's holidays, the Danish Maritime Authority carried out a two-week campaign in the USA to promote Danish quality shipping. The campaign took place in Houston and New York, respectively. The purpose of the campaign was to promote quality shipping under the Danish flag, inter alia to create good relations with the Port State Control authorities in the USA and with other players who are in contact with Danish shipping. The campaign also covered surveys of Danish ships calling at the two port areas during the said period.

UK to Create Shipping Jobs through New SMarT+

The UK shipping industry will create thousands of jobs for young people if Government increases funding for seafarer training, the UK Chamber of Shipping has said. The industry trains around 800 new cadets each year, but this could increase to 1200 under a new industry proposal that would see shipowners commit to employing cadets after their training is completed. Major employers including Shell and Carnival have already committed to the scheme. The scheme, documented in a business case presented to the Department for Transport and developed by the UK Chamber of Shipping, Merchant Navy Training Board and Nautilus International, calls for the Government to double seafarer training funding from £15m to £30m.

Denmark Gets QUALSHIP 21 Certificate

Once again, the U.S. Coast Guard has issued Denmark with the well-reputed certificate for United States Coast Guard's Quality Shipping for the 21st Century Program (QUALSHIP 21). The program is intended to secure and improve shipping and has existed since 2001. The program aims at identifying high quality ships and promoting quality shipping in this manner. Denmark has just received a diploma as evidence of the fact that Danish shipping maintains the standards of quality shipping. "Naturally, I am pleased that Danish shipping meets the high standards characteristic of quality shipping. Quality shipping is the foundation of the maritime industry in Denmark. Safety and growth go hand-in-hand," says Director General Andreas Nordseth of the Danish Maritime Authority.

BSM Acquires USCG Qualship 21 Program Approval

Singapore Recognises 53 Ships Under Green Ship Programme

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) today recognised another 53 Green Ships from 41 companies that have qualified for the Green Ship Programme (GSP) at the Third Singapore Registry of Ships Forum (SRS Forum). The GSP encourages Singapore-flagged ships to reduce carbon dioxide and sulphur oxides emissions. Qualifying Singapore-flagged ships can enjoy a reduction of Initial Registration Fees and a rebate on Annual Tonnage Tax. Since the GSP's inception in 2011, 247 Green Ships under the Singapore Flag have joined the programme. Additionally, 10 maritime companies signed the Maritime Singapore Green Pledge. This brings the total number of signees to 100 companies since the initiative's inception in 2011.
