Selektope Antifouling in demand at Korean Shipyards

As global water temperatures increase, global ‘biofouling hotspots’ in subtropical/tropical areas are intensifying, exposing newbuildings at the world’s major shipyards to greater risk of hard fouling during the outfitting process. The effects of intense hard fouling on idle newbuilds can have great impact on a newly applied hull coating and on a vessel’s performance in sea trials. In response to this problem, a new antifouling coating specifically targeting hard biofouling prevention during the outfitting period was brought to market by Danish marine coatings specialist Hempel in late 2017. GLOBIC 9500S includes the unique antifouling…

Selektope Coatings for Stena RoPax Newbuilds

(Image: Stena Line)

Stena RoRo, who has four newbuild RoPax ferries on order at the AVIC yard in Weihai, China, has signed a contract to coat the hulls with paint that incorporates the bio-repellent antifouling ingredient Selektope. According to Selektope’s developer, Gothenburg based bio-tech company I-Tech AB, its pharmacological mode of action combats barnacle settlement on ships’ hulls by temporarily stimulating the barnacle larvae’s swimming behavior. The organic, non-metal compound is characterized by high efficacy at extremely low concentrations (0.1 percent w/w)…

CMA CGM Group's Environmental Initiatives

The CMA CGM Group has just acquired another 18,000 new units, bringing its eco-container fleet to nearly 140,000 teus. For many years, the Group has attempted to minimize its impact on the environment through the following initiatives. Since 2005, the Group has been offering containers with bamboo floors. The result of a collaboration between CMA CGM and one of its main customers, these containers meet two objectives: to limit the use of wood from primary forest and to improve the technical qualities of the containers. Today, more than 10% of the Group’s fleet is equipped with this type of flooring. What’s more, the Group is currently testing new synthetic resin flooring.

Biofouling Center Stage

Legislation has been favorably reported out of the Senate Committee in Commerce, Science, and Transportation that would, if enacted, constitute the first official steps by the federal government to come to grips with biofouling of the hulls of ships. The Ballast Water Management Act of 2007 (S. 1578) would, among other things, require the U.S. Coast Guard to conduct a study of vessel-borne vectors (other than ballast water and sediment), specifically including vessel hulls, anchors, and equipment.

Anti-Fouling Legislation Coming From IMO

Next week at the IMO in London a Diplomatic Conference will be held to finalize the details of the Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-fouling Systems. In particular the phasing out of tin based (TBT) anti-fouling systems will be finalized with a system put in place to assess future anti-fouling systems. INTERTANKO, together with the other main industry representatives ICS, Intercargo, SIGTTO, OCIMF and Bimco have submitted a paper to the Conference focusing on those issues which concern the industry and which still need to be resolved. One of the greatest concerns is the possibility of having to remove all trace of a TBT based coating after 2008 and so requiring the complete blasting of the hull.
