McAllister Towing Orders Two New Tier 4 Tugs

Gulf Island Shipyards Delivers Icebreaking Tug to SLSDC

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (SLSDC) announced it has taken delivery of its new 118-foot icebreaking tug, the Seaway Guardian, in Massena, N.Y. Built by Gulf Island Shipyards in Houma, La., the vessel is the first new tug to join SLSDC since the Seaway opened 61 years ago.The new $24 million tug will primarily be used for buoy maintenance and ice management on the St. Lawrence Seaway, replacing the long-serving 62-year-old Robinson Bay, which the SLSDC will maintain as backup.

MARAD Awards More Than $20 Mln to Small US Shipyards

More than $20 million in grant funding has been awarded to support capital improvement projects at 29 small shipyards in 22 states across the U.S.The funding, awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) Small Shipyard Grant Program, supports capital improvements that foster increased efficiency and economic growth.“These grants are an investment in our country’s small shipyards and will help create good jobs for America’s workers,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L.

Construction Begins on Washburn & Doughty Hull 101

On January 4, 2011, Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. of East Boothbay, Maine began construction of a 93-ft by 38-ft, 6,000 hp Z-Drive tug for Moran Towing Corporation of New Canaan, Conn. Washburn & Doughty is building the vessel to its newest in-house design based upon the yard’s previous 92-ft by 32-ft design, of which there are 22 tugs in operation. The increased length and beam will allow for increased horsepower while maintaining the maneuvering characteristics and handling capabilities.

Washburn & Doughty Delivers Mary Ann Moran

On September 1, 2010, Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. delivered the Mary Ann Moran, a 121 ft x 36 ft x 18 ft Intercon Tug, to Moran Towing Corporation. Designed by Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering Corp., Mary Ann Moran is the fourth vessel built by Washburn & Doughty to this design and delivered to Moran Towing. According to the vessel’s captain, Mr. Jake Jarrell, “I can say that this boat is by far one of the best vessels I have ever had the pleasure of working on in over 30 years in the industry.

Washburn & Doughty 80-ft Z-Drive Tug

Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. of East Boothbay, Maine is pleased to unveil its new 80-ft by 33.8-ft Z-Drive Tug design. The vessel is designed for ship handling and harbor work. It admeasures less than 150 gross tons allowing it to operate without a load line assignment. The tug is designed to exceed ABS standards and customers can choose to specify ABS class. 70 Shipyards Awarded ARRA Grants

The Department of Transportation has announced 70 grants totaling $98m in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds that will be used to improve small shipyards throughout the United States. The funds, awarded through the Maritime Administration’s Assistance to Small Shipyards program, will help create and preserve jobs, provide valuable employment training and make much needed improvements to shipyards across the country. The Small Shipyards Grant program provides up to 75 percent in ARRA funds for a project and requires the remainder be matched by the shipyard. A detailed list of the grantees is as follows. •    Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc.,  Philadelphia, PA: $2,312,614, for the first year of training program.

Maritime Administration Awards $9.8m in Shipyard Grants

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration announced $9.8m in grants to 19 small shipyards in the . The grants are part of the new Assistance to Small Shipyards program, set up under the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2006. “Small shipyards are vitally important for the health of the maritime industry, and for the economy of the Nation,” said Maritime Administrator Sean T. Connaughton. The purpose of the grants is to make capital and infrastructure improvements that facilitate the efficiency, cost-effectiveness and quality of domestic ship construction, conversion or repair for commercial and federal government use. The grants cover a maximum of 75-percent of the estimated cost of improvements. The companies are responsible for the remainder.

W&D Delivers the Kaye E. Moran

Late last year, Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. of East Boothbay, Maine delivered Kaye E. Moran, a 92’ x 32’, 5100 HP Z Drive Firefighting Tug, to the Moran Towing Corporation of New Canaan, Connecticut. The vessel will be used to provide ship-assist services for LNG tankers at the recently reopened Dominion Cove Point LNG storage terminal south of Baltimore, Maryland, on the Chesapeake Bay. Kaye E. Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. delivered the 5,000 hp Z-Drive Tug Independent to Marine Towing of Tampa. The 92 x 32 x 13.7-ft. tug is designed for ship handling and built to ABS Class Maltese Cross A1, Maltese Cross AMS, with notation: Towing Service and Fire Fighting Capability. Independent admeasures 148 gt and has a Load Line based on USA flag registry and USCG rules. Bollard pull is estimated at 135,000 lbs ahead and 130,000 lbs astern. Independent is powered by High Displacement Caterpillar 3516 B main engines – rated at 2,500 bhp @ 1,600 rpm – with electronic injection.

Washburn & Doughty Wins Tug Contract

Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. signed a contract to build a 92 x 32-ft. Z-Drive Tug for the Providence Steamboat Company. Providence Steamboat Company, located in Providence, RI, operates tugboats on Narragansett Bay and adjacent southeast New England waters. Engaged primarily in vessel assist work, the company has six tugs with two under construction. The vessel currently being built by Washburn & Doughty is Providence Steamboat’s first Z Drive Tug. Delivery is scheduled for December 2004. The new tug will be powered by two Caterpillar 3516HD main engines each rated at 2,500 hp @ 1,600 rpm. The propulsion units will be Rolls-Royce Aquamaster model US 205 Z Drives with NiBrAl 90.5-in. propellers and Kort nozzles lined with stainless steel.

Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. delivered the 5,000 hp Z-Drive Tug Independent to Marine Towing of Tampa. The 92 x 32 x 13.7-ft. tug is designed for ship handling and built to ABS Class Maltese Cross A1, Maltese Cross AMS, with notation: Towing Service and Fire Fighting Capability. Independent admeasures 148 gt and has a Load Line based on USA flag registry and USCG rules. Bollard pull is estimated at 135,000 lbs ahead and 130,000 lbs astern. Independent is powered by High Displacement Caterpillar 3516 B main engines - rated at 2,500 bhp @ 1,600 rpm - with electronic injection. The propulsion units are Rolls-Royce 1650H Z drives equipped with 2,400 mm stainless steel propellers and Kort nozzles with stainless steel liners.

Capt. Harry Delivered to Wilmington Tug

On December 19, Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc., of East Boothbay, Maine delivered Capt. Harry, a 4200 hp Z Drive tug to Wilmington Tug of Wilmington, Del. Designed by Robert Allan Ltd., this ASD 25/55 Class Tug measure 80 x 32 ft. It will be used primarily for ship docking; however, and extended keel will allow for operation as an escort tug in the indirect mode. Wilmington Tug operates five tugs, and in 1977 became the first operator in North America to operate a Z Drive Tug. Wilmington Tug’s newest vessel is the ninth Z Drive Tug built by Washburn & Doughty since the Fort Bragg was constructed for Cape Fear Towing in 1998. Two Detroit Diesel model 12V4000 main engines rated at 2100 hp at 1800 RPM power the vessel.

Great Boats of 2000

Every year, MarineNews chooses a handful of vessels delivered in the past 12 months and bestows upon them the distinction of “Great Boats.” The boats are chosen for innovations in design, construction and utilization. Following are the 17 vessels or groups of vessels chosen as the Great Boats of 2000. Crowley Marine Services delivered Alert, Attentive, and Aware, a series of three 140-ft., 10,000-hp Prevention and Response Tugs (PRTs), to Alyeska Pipeline Service Company in Valdez, Alaska. Specifically designed and developed for Alyeska, the boats will be used by Crowley in the Trans Alaska Pipeline System trade. Alert was deployed in February; Attentive was delivered in June, and Aware was delivered in July.

Blount/Barker Appoints New Senior V.P.

Blount/Barker ShipBuilding, Warren, R.I. has elected Jacob A. Stevens III as its new senior vice president. A well-known shipbuilder, whose career highlights include the construction of six 92 ft. (28 m), 4,000 hp Marci-Class Z drive tug boats in under 20 months for Moran Towing, Stevens will be responsible for all shipyard operations including engineering, design, labor, purchasing, scheduling and working with outside contractors. Prior to joining Blount/Barker, Stevens was production and project supervisor at Washburn & Doughty Associates. While there, Stevens implemented an in-house CAD technology to facilitate quick design adjustments and e-mail communication with subcontractors.

Washburn & Doughty Delivers Eleanor F. Moran

On March 12, 2007, Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. of East Boothbay, Maine delivered the Eleanor F. Moran, a 92 x 32-ft., 5100 hp, Z-Drive Firefighting Tug, to Moran Towing of New Canaan, Connecticut. The vessel is operating at the port of Norfolk, Virginia. Eleanor F. Moran is classed ABS Maltese Cross A1 Towing, Maltese Cross AMS, with Escort Notation, Towing Service, Maltese Cross A1 Fire Fighting Vessel, Class 1. The Firefighting 1 classification requires two monitors to each produce 5,280 gpm for a distance of 394 ft. at a height of 148 ft., as well as a deluge system and the ability to sustain firefighting operations for a minimum of 24 consecutive hours.

Washburn & Doughty and BTT Team Up to Build Tugs for LNG Application

Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. of East Boothbay, Maine is currently building two 4400 HP Z Drive (ASD) Tugs for Boston Towing & Transportation Company (BTT) of Boston, Massachusetts. The vessels measure 92’ x 32’ x 13’9” and have an estimated bollard pull of 110,000 lbs ahead and 105,000 lbs astern. BTT is a division of Reinauer Transportation Companies of Staten Island, New York. The vessels, which will be named Freedom and Liberty, were design to fulfill BTT’s contract with Tractebel LNG Shipping North America LLC. Tractebel brings LNG ships into Boston Harbor. The tugs will assist the LNG tankers during inbound and outbound transits and will be used to turn the ships 180° in the basin east of the Tobin Bridge and back them under the bridge to their Mystic River berth.
