Heavy Lifter: Spreader Beam Lifting Rig for Bridge Project

The spreader beam lifting rig was used below the hook of a crane barge on the Firth of Forth.

Rope and Sling Specialists Ltd provided a below-the-hook solution to infrastructure management company Amey to lift a truck-mounted access platform during maintenance on the Forth Road Bridge in Scotland. Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, undertakes services associated with the operation, management and maintenance of the Forth Road Bridge and its approach roads. It carried out overnight repairs on the bridge last month (December). Rope and Sling provided a spreader beam lifting rig to lift a 35t Bronto Skylift (a mobile elevating work platform or MEWP) provided by Nationwide Platforms.

Melbourne Box Pot Lining Up Bidders

Three of Australia's largest infrastructure funds plan to bid for the country's largest container terminal in a sale expected to fetch about A$5 billion ($4.27 billion) for Victoria state, a source with knowledge of the process said on Wednesday. The prospect of three bidders suggests Victoria, Australia's second most populous state, will reap a hefty price for the asset and encourage other Australian states looking to sell a combined A$130 billion of assets in the next 18 months. Pension fund IFM Investors has hired investment banks JPMorgan Chase & Co and Barclays Capital to prepare a bid for Port of Melbourne, while a consortium of Hastings Funds Management Ltd and Kuwait sovereign fund Wren House Infrastructure Management have hired UBS AG, the source said.

Japanese Shipbuilders Take Stake in Brazil's ECOVIX

Five Japanese companies – Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Corporation – have agreed to acquire a stake in ECOVIX -Engevix Construções Oceânicas S.A. (ECOVIX), a leading Brazilian shipbuilder. A Share Purchase Agreement (SPA) between the Japanese consortium and the Brazilian partners has been signed by the parties. The initiative marks the first investment by a Japanese consortium into a Brazilian shipbuilding business, with the Japanese side providing advanced technology and operating expertise. BMT Group Created from Merger

The BMT Group, maritime design, engineering and risk management consultancy, announced the merger of three companies, BMT SeaTech, BMT Argoss and the Southampton and Polish businesses of BMT Cordah. The merged entity will retain the name of BMT Argoss. The capabilities of each company are being brought together to offer customers full turn-key solutions. Browning Appointed CEO at Austal USA

The Executive Chairman of Austal Limited, Mr John Rothwell AO, today announced the appointment of Mr Bob Browning as Chief Executive Officer of Austal USA, effective mid August this year. Mr Rothwell said Mr Browning would add substantial experience to Austal’s existing executive team, and assist the company achieve its strategic growth plans across all sectors of the business. Mr Browning has been a non-executive Director of the Company since September 2003. Kuwait Coast Guard Orders Atlas VTS

Bremen-based STN Atlas Elektronik has been awarded a major contract to supply the Kuwaiti National Coast Guard with a new purpose-designed radar-based coastal surveillance system due to begin service in 2005. The system will comprise a series of nine Atlas 9760 VTS high-resolution radar stations providing loss-free digitized raw video for operator detection of all sizes of targets, particularly very small ones. Additionally, some stations will also include radio direction finders and meteorological sensors as well as specially-designed AIS facilities to meet specific Coast Guard requirements. All the stations will be connected via high-availability microwave links to two VTS sub-centers.
