The Department of Homeland Security awarded more than $6.1 million in supplementary Port Security Grant funds to the ports of San Francisco, Oakland, Richmond and Stockton, California. The San Francisco Marine Exchange was selected by the Coast Guard Federal Maritime Security Coordinator as the fiduciary agent to oversee the use of these funds on behalf of the Northern California Area Maritime Security Committee. The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) said that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that it has made available an additional $110m in fiscal 2007 Port Security Grant funding. The money, to pay for security improvements in and around America's public ports, was part of a compromise Iraqi war appropriations supplemental bill that was signed into law last May. Currently, the Port Security Grant program divides eligible ports into four tiers, based on their perceived risk, with top tier ports receiving the lion's share of the available funds. Authorizing the expenditure of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Port Security Grant Funds, the Board of Harbor Commissioners has approved an agreement with Siemens Building Technologies for waterborne security barriers. The $2.9m design-build agreement includes the design, fabrication and delivery of 10,000 feet of floating security barriers. The Port of Los Angeles is taking the lead on this joint Port of Los Angeles/Port of Long Beach project which was approved in Round 3 of the TSA's Port Security Grants. Each port will receive 5,000 feet of the waterborne barriers. These barriers will be placed at key locations around the ports during heightened security times. They will provide protection against certain types of attacks and will form a line of demarcation.

Members of Congressional Committee to Visit Port of Houston Democratic members of the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security will visit the Port of Houston tomorrow. The democratic members of the congressional committee are reviewing port security strategies and tactics.
