Armstrong Delivers Dive Boat to DNR

A new monohull dive compliance vessel Salish Scout was recently accepted by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) after successful launch and sea trials in Port Angeles Harbor.In a competitive solicitation process last year, DNR selected Armstrong Marine’s proposal to design and build multiple vessels for their Marine Law Enforcement program. Salish Scout is a sister ship to the vessel Sentry, completed earlier this summer.Salish Scout is customized for efficient geoduck fishery management along with other marine law enforcement operations. Canal Boats Delivers Texas Water Taxi

Canal Boats, Inc. has delivered six 50-passenger water taxis for service on The Woodlands Waterway in Texas. Texas Water Taxi has a contract with The Brazos Transit District to provide waterborne transit service along the 1.25 mile corridor. The corridor services a regional mall, offices, residential, a concert pavilion and a convention center. The 35-ft. fiberglass boats have a beam of 11.5 ft., draft of 2.5 ft. and are built to USCG plans. They are powered by twin 5 hp Ray Electric Outboard motors and provide a service speed of up to 7 mph. The battery banks are replenished by 60-volt, 40-amp, electronic battery chargers powered by an Onan 21 kW diesel generator, which also powers the five 15,000 BTU Coleman air conditioners.

Boatracs Appoints New Personnel

Boatracs, a business unit of Advanced Remote Communication Solutions, Inc., has appointed new personnel to better service clients, and expand sales coverage in the Pacific Northwest. In newly created positions, Robert Trainor joins the company as Sales Engineer, managing activities for the Pacific Northwest, Alaska and western Canada, and Steven M. Bryan, Sr. as Manager of Projects, Design and Development. Both positions report to Charles J. Drobny Jr., Chief Operating Officer of Boatracs. Trainor is responsible for expanding Boatracs' regional coverage by delivering products and services that improve safety, integrate information, manage data, and facilitate fishermen's ability to obtain the best price for their catch while at sea.

Two Bites of an Apple Disallowed

In an unpublished decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit ruled that a plaintiff may not bring separate actions against different parties based on the same nucleus of operative facts. In the instant case, plaintiff was injured when thrown from a boat. He sued the manufacturer of the outboard motor, the manufacturer of the boat, the retailer of the boat and motor, the boat owner/operator, and the insurance company of the owner/operator, alleging negligence and strict products liability under admiralty and under state law. The parties settled during the course of the trial and the actions were dismissed with prejudice. Plaintiff then filed an almost identical suit against defendant.

NMEA Recognizes New Compliant Products

The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) is recognizing four marine electronics manufacturers for introducing their new NMEA 2000 compliant products at the 2002 NMEA Convention. The participating companies are Kvaser, Raymarine, Simrad, and Teleflex. Kvaser is introducing Kvaser Neptune hardware and software, which provides a gateway between maritime serial and CAN communications. It is equipped with two serial channels and one CAN channel to translate select NMEA 0183 formatted messages to their NMEA 2000 counterparts. In addition, select NMEA 2000 messages are translated to NMEA 0183 messages. With power provided by the NMEA 2000 bus, installation is as simple as mounting and connecting the communication channels.

MetalCraft Building Multi-Beam Hydrographic Survey Craft

MetalCraft Marine Inc., of Kingston, Ontario, is nearing completion of its second Hydrographic Survey Craft for the Canadian Government's Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), Canadian Hydrographic Service. The 30 x 10.3 ft. vessel will carry three transducers, the largest being a state of the art 332 mm Multi-beam Transducer by Kongsberg-Simrad, Model EM-3000. The total Multi-beam system is worth approximately three times the value of the vessel, which was sold for $129,000. The Canadian Hydrographic Service, Central and Arctic Regions is responsible for updating and validating Canadian navigational charts for all inland and Arctic waters, including the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway.
