Port of Everett Earns Marad Short Sea Shipping Designation

The Port of Everett has achieved another vital step in reducing congestion on the I-5 corridor while moving more freight in the region. The Port was notified this month that it received designation by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation as a Federal Maritime Administration Marine Highway Project for the Puget Sound Container on Barge Service under the America’s Marine Highway Program.The Port is one of 25 marine highway projects in the nation, and the only marine project designation on the West Coast.

DMS Acquires Jeppesen's Marine Division from Boeing

Digital Marine Solutions (DMS) has completed acquisition of the assets of the Marine Division of Jeppesen, a Boeing company. Digital Marine Solutions is owned by the Altor 2003 Fund. Under the terms of the agreement the Jeppesen Marine and C-MAP portfolio will continue to operate as a separate entity under the C-MAP brand name. Digital Marine Acquires Jeppesen's Marine Division

Digital Marine Solutions announced today it has signed a purchase agreement to acquire the marine division of Jeppesen, subject to regulatory approval. Under the terms of the agreement, the former Jeppesen Marine will operate as a separate entity with its own dedicated resources and will trade under the C-MAP brand name. Jeppesen will remain as part of The Boeing Company. Digital Marine Solutions is owned by the Altor 2003 Fund, which is part of the Nordic based Altor family of private equity funds. This strategic acquisition leverages Altor’s experience in the Marine industry, where it also is the majority owner of the Navico house of marine brands.

'Amazingly Intact' WWII-era Aircraft Carrier Surveyed

NOAA, working with private industry partners and the U.S. Navy, has confirmed the location and condition of the USS Independence, the lead ship of its class of light aircraft carriers that were critical during the American naval offensive in the Pacific during World War II. Resting in 2,600 feet of water off California's Farallon Islands, the carrier is "amazingly intact," said NOAA scientists, with its hull and flight deck clearly visible, and what appears to be a plane in the carrier's hangar bay.

General Dynamics takes Rudy deLeon on Board

The board of directors of General Dynamics has elected Rudy deLeon to be a director of the corporation, effective September 30, 2014. DeLeon is a senior fellow with the Center for American Progress, a position he has held since November 2007. He began his career with the federal government, where he served for 25 years until 2001. In his final position as deputy secretary of defense, he was the chief operating officer at the Pentagon, a member of the Deputies Committee of the National Security Council and a member of the National Partnership Council. He was also undersecretary of defense for Personnel and Readiness from 1997 to 2000, and he was undersecretary of the U.S. Air Force from 1994 to 1997.

Inmarsat $1.2B Investment in KA-Band Satellite

Inmarsat (LSE: ISAT), provider of global mobile satellite communications services, announced that it has agreed a contract with The Boeing Company for the delivery of three state-of-the-art 702HP Ka-band satellites. The Inmarsat-5 constellation will enable Inmarsat to provide a unique global high speed mobile broadband service offering. With operations expected to start in 2014, Inmarsat-5 will support a next generation global service, Global Xpress, which will target a $1.4b incremental market opportunity in VSAT services. Global Xpress will address the established, growing markets for VSAT services in the Maritime, Energy and Government sectors, with further growth potential in developing markets such as the Aeronautical sector.

Jeppesen, Furuno Partner on Navigation

Jeppesen, a subsidiary of The Boeing Company, has teamed with Furuno and MapMedia to develop NavNet 3D-compatible C-MAP by Jeppesen vector charts. This will allow boaters to use advanced features and functionality of the NavNet 3D system while navigating with C-MAP by Jeppesen chart data. North American boaters will now be able to utilize C-MAP by Jeppesen charts processed into MapMedia mm3d format to work in their NavNet 3D systems. Boeing Wins $4m Navy Comms Deal

The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] won a $4m U.S. Navy contract to provide a ship-wide communications network for two guided missile destroyers (DDG) now under construction. The contract, awarded by the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Va., calls for Boeing to supply the Gigabit Ethernet Data Multiplex System (GEDMS) information transfer system for the DDG 111 and 112 destroyers. Boeing will deliver electronic components over the next 12 months to support shipbuilding schedules. Under a contract awarded in 2007, Boeing continues to support the installation and checkout of the Fiber Optic Data Multiplex System (FODMS) for DDG 110.

Teekay, Boeing To Test High-Speed Internet @ Sea

Connexion by Boeing, a business unit of The Boeing Company, and Teekay Shipping Corporation signed an agreement to launch a maritime trial of the Connexion by Boeing service over the North Atlantic beginning in August 2004. "Teekay is a proven leader in the maritime industry and we are thrilled at the opportunity to demonstrate the value that affordable real-time, high-speed connectivity can bring to their operations at sea," said Connexion by Boeing President Scott Carson. Boeing Awards $73M Platform Contract

AMFELS Inc, a member of Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd (Keppel O&M), has won a $73 million firm-fixed-price contract for the modification of a platform from The Boeing Company. The SBX Platform is a self-propelled semi-submersible modified oil-drilling platform developed for the US Government’s Sea-Based Test X-Band Radar (SBX) in support of its ground-based midcourse missile defense system. The work scope involves outfitting of the bare hull of the platform, construction and assembling of the living quarters, the electrical, networking and mechanical work and the commissioning of the vessel. The vessel is expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2005.

Boeing to Acquire C-Map

The Boeing Company reached an agreement to acquire C-Map, a leading provider of digital maritime cartography, data services and other navigational information. C-Map will become a part of Jeppesen's marine division. Jeppesen is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Boeing Commercial Aviation Services. Boeing Installs Sea-Based Radar's Mooring System

The Boeing Company announced that the Sea-Based X-Band Radar (SBX) mooring system has been installed at SBX's homeport in Alaska, completing a key piece of infrastructure for the missile defense sensor. Manson Construction, a Boeing subcontractor, used tugs, barges and cranes to place the mooring system's eight anchors on the bottom of Kuluk Bay. Heavy machinery aboard a barge then dragged the 75-metric-ton anchors, embedding them into the sea bed. The construction team completed the installation three weeks ahead of schedule. When SBX visits its homeport of Adak, Alaska, a small island in the Aleutian Islands, it will be chained to the anchors to keep it stationary in Kuluk Bay. SBX is a new sensor developed by Boeing for the U.S.

Teekay Shipping is First for Connexion by Boeing

Teekay Shipping Corporation and Connexion by Boeing, a business unit of The Boeing Company signed an agreement that makes Teekay the international launch customer for the Connexion by Boeing Maritime Service. The maritime service is designed to allow vessels in mid-ocean transit to experience global high-speed communications at affordable rates. The agreement calls for the high-speed communications service to be fitted on 50 of Teekay's vessels, with an option to install on an additional 40. "As we worked closely with Connexion by Boeing during the service trial last year, we were very impressed by the power and potential the technology provides," said Graham Westgarth, president of Teekay Marine Services, a business unit of Teekay Shipping Corporation.

Port of Tacoma Selects Wolfe as Deputy Executive Director

The Port of Tacoma has selected John Wolfe as Deputy Executive Director. Wolfe, is currently Executive Director at the Port of Olympia. He is a native of Puyallup, Washington and a graduate of Tacoma's Pacific Lutheran University (B.A. in Business Administration, 1987). Port of Tacoma Executive Director Timothy J. Farrell says Wolfe brings a collaborative leadership style to Tacoma. "We have known John for many years and respect his ability to build teams and lead an organization," he said. "As our Port grows, it is important to bring people with John's capabilities into our organization. Before being named Port of Olympia Executive Director in December 2003, Wolfe served as Olympia's Director of Operations and Marine Terminal General Manager.
