Lloyd’s Register (LR) announced that John Hicks is President of Americas Marine & Offshore. Hicks returns to the U.S. after two years of leading LR’s Global Passenger Ship Center in Trieste, Italy as Global Passenger Ship Sector Manager and Italy’s Marine Manager. Previously based in the U.S., he was Business Development Manager for the Americas as well as LR’s Applied Technology Group (ATG).One of the key priorities for John in his new role is continued focus on LR’s expansion of its Digital Innovation services.

To further enhance its research capabilities Eco Marine Power announced today that it will begin using the Neural Network Console provided by Sony Network Communications Inc., as part of a strategy to incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into various ongoing ship related technology projects including the further development of the patented Aquarius MRE (Marine Renewable Energy) and EnergySail. The Neural Network Console is an integrated development environment using deep learning for AI creation and has been used in deep learning applied technology development within Sony since 2015. Various functions are included such as recognition technology and a full-fledged GUI (graphical user interface) and these allow for deep learning programs to be developed.

When Mercy Ships decided to increase the airflow in the CAT scanner room on board its hospital ship, Africa Mercy, the international charity turned to Elta Fans’ Applied Technology division for help. The Africa Mercy operates in hot and humid climates in Africa making it challenging to keep the medical spaces cool, this is particularly difficult in the CAT scanner room. Adding to this problem, in 2013 Mercy Ships installed a new CT scanner which produces a lot more heat than the older model. To adequately remove the heat buildup and bring in cooled air, a more powerful fan was required.

TNO and Imtech Marine have signed an agreement expressing intent to work together on research and development projects. The signing took place on January 21 at Imtech Marine in Rotterdam. TNO and Imtech have joined forces many times over the years and see possibilities to further strengthen each other and in doing so deliver added value to the market and society, said the contract signatories, Henk Geveke, General Director of Defence & Security on behalf of TNO, and André Meijer, Managing Director on behalf of Imtech Marine.

RWE Dea doubled its oil and gas production in Egypt and drawn up expansion plans. North Africa is a strategic core region for Dea. The company is one of the leading foreign investors in Egypt and produces oil and gas in the country for 30 years by now. RWE Dea is presenting applied technology highlights and recent projects at the MOC 2014 in Alexandria. Kongsberg Maritime recently delivered a new rig simulator model at Simsea, based on the Floatel Superior accommodation unit, which is currently in operation in the North Sea. Kongsberg Maritime will deliver the latest version of its leading Engine Room Simulator (ERS), K-Sim Engine, to a new Applied Technology Facility at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) in New Zealand. Taking place in June 2014, this will be the first Kongsberg Maritime ERS delivery to a customer in New Zealand but one of many to leading maritime training institutions in the Southern hemisphere. Life Cycle Engineering, Inc. (LCE) today announced that Edward S. Godfrey has joined Life Cycle Engineering as vice president of business development. LCE informs that  Godfrey will be responsible for partnering with Department of Defense (DoD) customers and other government organizations to establish engineering and technical solutions that support the warfighter and DoD mission. Godfrey has over 36 years of civilian service leading large, diversified engineering and corporate operations organizations within the Department of the Navy’s Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA).

In efforts to extend ship life, increase capability and assure critical operations, the U.S. Navy is refitting its USS Mount Whitney Blue Ridge class command ship. GE’s Power Conversion business has signed a contract worth $14 million (USD) if all options are exercised with Military Sealift Command (MSC) for this three-year, large electrical refit project, which will be one of the largest MSC has ever completed of this type as well as GE Power Conversion’s largest electrical refit project for the U.S. Navy.

Paul C. Jensen, CEO of Halo Maritime Defense Systems (HMDS),announced the addition of the Honorable Jay M. Cohen, Rear Admiral USN (ret), as Chairman of the Board. Admiral Cohen is a native of New York. He was commissioned in 1968 upon graduation from the United States Naval Academy. He holds a joint Ocean Engineering degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Master of Science in Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture from MIT. His early Navy assignments included service on conventional and nuclear submarines.

Oceaneering International, Inc. (NYSE:OII) announced it has secured a one-year term contract with estimated revenue in the range of $25m to $30m for use of the MSV Ocean Intervention and other related services, commencing early February 2009. The contract contains a customer option for a one-year extension. The customer has contracted Oceaneering to conduct inspection, repair, and maintenance (IRM) of deepwater subsea facilities in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). Examples of this work include changing out pods and chokes, installing flowline jumpers and control umbilical flying leads, remediating hydrates, and supporting diving operations on deepwater floating facilities.

Oceaneering International, Inc. has reached a settlement with the Delaware River Port Authority and Miziker and Company in connection with a dispute regarding services provided in 1999 by Oceaneering's Advanced Technologies Group. The agreed upon settlement is for a total of approximately $4.5 million. Oceaneering had previously made a reserve of $4.0 million to cover this matter. The remaining $0.5 million will be recorded as a charge to pre-tax income in its fourth quarter 2003 financial statement results, scheduled to be released on February 18, 2004. Oceaneering is an advanced applied technology company that provides engineered services and hardware to customers who operate in marine, space, and other harsh environments.

Growing oil exports from the Russian port of Primorsk and Sakhalin have prompted a marked increase in the number of new tankers on order with ice strengthening to allow more flexible trading. Additionally, operators are taking into consideration the 2010 IMO imposed single hull phase-out deadline as they renew their aframax fleets. “The FEA Guide allows us to perform direct calculations for developing alternative structural arrangements that are more producible than those developed from the prescriptive rules,” says Akira Akiyama, Vice President, Technology & Business Development, ABS Pacific.

Dutch engineering consultancy Fugro NV said that, together with Boeing Co. and Oceaneering International, it had sealed a partnership to provide underwater survey services. The venture combines the marine experience of Houston-based Oceaneering, an advanced applied technology company, Fugro and the unmanned vehicle and autonomous guidance technology of Boeing, the world's largest aerospace company. The underwater services, to be provided initially for oil and gas exploration and telecommunications markets, will be available by the end of this year. The vehicle should eventually replace towed survey systems that are currently used to collect data.

The U.S. Navy is awarding indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity multiple award contracts to 391 contractors that will provide for their competition for service requirements solicited by Naval Sea Systems Command, Naval Air Systems Command, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, Naval Supply Systems Command, Military Sealift Command, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Strategic Systems Programs, and the United States Marine Corps. The 22 functional service areas within the scope of the contracts include 1. Research and Development Support. 2. Engineering System Engineering and Process Engineering Support. 3. Modeling, Simulation, Stimulation, and Analysis Support. 4. Prototyping, Pre-Production, Model-Making, and Fabrication Support.
