Tor Svanes, "Mr. ECDIS", Chronicled in New Book

NAVTOR CEO Tor Svanes is "Mr. ECDIS", at least that't the title he's been given in a new book charting his life story as well as his role in the development of maritime e-Navigation. Author Tønnes H. Gundersen details the voyage that took Svanes from electrician’s apprentice in the small town of Egersund, Southern Norway, to a globally renowned figure in this key smart shipping niche. And, Svanes is keen to add, the journey isn’t over yet.Gundersen spent more than two years researching, interviewing and writing the 300-page opus, which was launched today in both English and Norwegian versions.

DMS Acquires Jeppesen's Marine Division from Boeing

Digital Marine Solutions (DMS) has completed acquisition of the assets of the Marine Division of Jeppesen, a Boeing company. Digital Marine Solutions is owned by the Altor 2003 Fund. Under the terms of the agreement the Jeppesen Marine and C-MAP portfolio will continue to operate as a separate entity under the C-MAP brand name. Navico Makes its Commercial Push

Marine electronics group Navico, a literal ‘house of brands’ for the recreational, sail, power and commercial marine markets, is making a strong push in the commercial sector with its Simrad brand. The ascension of Navico in recreational marine electronics business – an estimated $1 billion market globally – was fast and furious, growing from roughly 7% of the global market in 2005 to nearly 30% in 2007, standing steady at about 35% today, fueled by a strategy built on the acquisition of strong brands mixed with organic growth.

Digital Marine Acquires Jeppesen's Marine Division

Digital Marine Solutions announced today it has signed a purchase agreement to acquire the marine division of Jeppesen, subject to regulatory approval. Under the terms of the agreement, the former Jeppesen Marine will operate as a separate entity with its own dedicated resources and will trade under the C-MAP brand name. Jeppesen will remain as part of The Boeing Company. Digital Marine Solutions is owned by the Altor 2003 Fund, which is part of the Nordic based Altor family of private equity funds. This strategic acquisition leverages Altor’s experience in the Marine industry, where it also is the majority owner of the Navico house of marine brands.

ECDIS for 28 More Vessels in Caspian Fleet

PC Maritime and its Estonian trading partner Marine Technics have won a contract to supply Navmaster ECDIS to 28 Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company (ACSC) vessels.   The order follows the operation of Navmaster ECDIS on 13 ACSC vessels over the past three years. The initial supply is for single ECDIS with 24-inch displays, with an option to extend to dual ECDIS, and Jeppesen Primar charts and updating services. The systems will be installed and supported locally by Marine Technics’ office in Baku.

ChartCo Debuts Improved Navigation Data Software

ChartCo, a division of Kelvin Hughes, recently announced the release of a new  version of its PassageManager data management software. This latest release - PassageManager 5.1 - will be on display at SMM and incorporates a number of new features and improvements. NavArea Warnings for all 21 areas are now presented graphically on a map and users can manage and monitor new, in-force and cancelled warnings via the NavArea Manager module. Warnings can also be incorporated into the passage plan if required.

Jeppesen Wins IHMS Contract in Singapore

Jeppesen has been awarded a contract to develop and implement an Integrated Hydrographic Management System (IHMS) for the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore, a governmental agency established to develop Singapore as a premier global hub port and international maritime center, as well as to advance and safeguard Singapore’s strategic maritime interests. The contract is for two years, with an optional three-year extension. The Jeppesen IHMS will provide multiple functionalities, including bathymetric data handling, management and storage integrated with Jeppesen’s dKart Source Management system and dKart Office tools for ENC and paper chart production and maintenance.

Simrad Launches New ECDIS

A new, fully IMO certified Integrated Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) navigation system has been announced today, the Simrad CS68 Integrated ECDIS, designed specifically for the commercial market. The Simrad CS68 Integrated ECDIS system offers direct access to key dedicated navigation capabilities. Installation and customization options are virtually endless, depending on the particular configuration of a vessel. Available in two screen sizes, the CS68 19-inch model has a 5:4 aspect ratio for streamlined retrofitting.

Jeppesen Updates VVOS Software

Jeppesen has launched updated versions of its Voyage and Vessel Optimization Solution (VVOS) and FleetManager software. VVOS Version 2.3 voyage optimization product is enhanced by incorporating Emission Control Area (ECA) boundaries and adding restricted RPM zones. FleetManager Version 1.4, a shoreside fleet management product, also features improved performance analysis and reporting tools. Jeppesen FleetManager 1.4 has been enhanced to meet the needs of today’s shipping customers, with new reporting features customized to the needs of vessels and shore side offices.

Jeppesen Revolutionizes ENC Licensing With New Solution

Jeppesen has revolutionized the navigational chart industry by introducing FlatFee licensing for its official Electronic Navigation Charts (ENCs). Jeppesen FlatFee lets mariners purchase some or all of nine worldwide zones at an affordable fixed price. Vessels are able to view and use all charts, for voyage planning and navigation, without limitations for one year. If sailing needs change, additional zone subscriptions can be added without having to create new licenses. Jeppesen uses a variation of existing licensing methods to ensure accurate processing of Hydrographic Office commissions.
