Shipyard Counter-claim Not Nullified by Insurance

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit ruled that the counter-claim of a shipyard defending an allegation of poor workmanship is not nullified by a provision in the ship repair contract requiring each party to have insurance. In the instant case, plaintiff ship owner contracted for defendant shipyard to make modifications to its ship. Six weeks after the ship was redelivered, it caught fire and sank. Plaintiff owner sued defendant shipyard, alleging the fire was the result of poor workmanship, but eventually lost. Defendant counter-claimed for the cost of defending the lawsuit. With regard to the counter-claim, plaintiff asserted that…

Offshore Support Focus

Diamond Services Corp., based in Morgan City, La., knows the importance of staying competitive in the oilfield service industry, which is why the company broke conventional rules of "propping" and built Mr. Mel, the first waterjet-powered crew/supply boat to work in the Gulf of Mexico. The diesel engine/waterjet combination, considered an innovative choice of propulsion system for a crewboat, offers advantages of increased speed, maneuverability and flexibility over propellers. The 145 ft. aluminum monohull, built by Swiftships, Inc., was delivered in February 1995. At the time, Mr. Mel was powered by four 815 bhp diesels driving four Hamilton HM-571 water jets through a Twin Disc MG-5202 gear with a 2:1 reduction ratio. Mr.

Playing the Tier Game

With few exceptions, marine power is diesel power and emissions levels from diesel engines are coming under increased scrutiny and regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency. The levels of acceptable NOx, carbon monoxide and particulate matter for diesel engines in U.S. flagged vessels depends on the displacement of the engine. The EPA has settled on a liters-per-cylinder measurement to determine the schedule to meet the emission requirements. For example, marine diesel engines between 1.2 and 2.5 liters per cylinder have had to meet what is known as Tier Two requirements since 2004. These are engines typically used to power small gensets, bow thrusters, fire pumps and other auxiliary engine requirements.

Bollinger Introduces

The evolution of a new offshore boat design ideally happens with considerable customer input. But in the case of Bollinger Shipyards' new 220-ft. class supply vessel, a fortunate coincidence happen. The first customer for the new vessel, C&G Boats, Golden Meadow, La., and Bollinger independently evolved a vessel with many of the same design features. "When we decided that we needed a new, more capable supply boat, we rejected many conventional designs because they did not have what our customers told us they wanted," said Joey Arceneaux, president of MNM Boats, the operating division of C&G Boats, Golden Meadow, La. Arceneaux said he…

News: Seacor Takes New Supply Boat from Bollinger

Seacor Madison, the first of three 207-ft., 4,750 bhp supply boats, was delivered to Seacor Marine, Inc., from Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. This delivery will be followed by two others of Seacor's new President Class offshore support vessels (OSV), the Seacor Washington and Seacor Jefferson. The boats are part of Bollinger's new 220 Class OSVs, vessels designed to raise versatility and cargo carrying capacity, while lowering operating costs. Bollinger's COO explains. "For example, the Seacor Madison can carry 6,223 barrels of liquid mud and has 6,000 cu. Ft. of storage for dry bulk mud," said Mike Ellis, chief operating officer of Bollinger. "Combine these capacities usually found in OSVs from 220-240 ft. with the lower operating costs of a 207-ft.

Vessels: Harvey Gulf takes First of Six Innovative OSVs

Harvey Gulf Intl. recently took delivery of Harvey Provider, a unique 240 x 56 x 18.5 Offshore Service Vessel (OSV) which is classed by ABS as Maltese Cross A1 Ocean Service Dynamic Position Level 2 (DP-2). Harvey Provider is the first of six vessels, and the DP-2 certification means that it can transport a full load of cargo (approximately 3,000 tons) in and out of most of South Louisiana, Texas and Alabama ports, not restricted exclusively to deepwater ports. Harvey Provider is special because of its navigational capabilities per its DP-2 certification, a designation which dramatically expands its scope of operation, and hence, revenue. The vessel is built to carry an incredible load, with a clear deck space measuring 175 x 56 ft. (9,800 sq. ft.), able to carry 2,352 short tons.

Workboats: The World's Largest OSV

There are several large offshore service vessels working in the Gulf of Mexico, but none so big and powerful as the Laney Chouest. At 348 ft. long by 72 ft. wide with a 31-ft. deep hull, the Laney Chouest simply dwarfs anything in the Gulf. Built by Edison Chouest Offshore, Galliano, La. at their North American Shipbuilding facility, the vessel is already at work in the Gulf on a charter for Shell Offshore. "This vessel was designed and built for a very specific mission-to preset mooring systems in 10,000 ft. of water safely and efficiently," said Roger White, senior vice president of Edison Chouest Offshore. "The real market for this vessel will be in the 5,000-10,000 ft.

Bollinger Builds Diverse Portfolio

The task of picking just one Bollinger Shipyards-built vessel to feature as a "Great Boat" is a nearly impossible task. Plainly stated, the boatbuilder is so active in such a diverse number of niches, it is impossible to select one as better than the other, given some of the groundbreaking vessels built in 2002. The editors of MarineNews have, hence, selected a two vessels for this focus: the liftboat L/B Myrtle; the shelf boat Ms. Another example of Bollinger Shipyards' ability and willingness to integrate customer demand into its new products is the new Super Shelf Boat, Ms. Sara Jane. When MNM Boats, the operating division of C&G Boats…
