Cathelco to Prevent Marine Growth on KOC's Oil Spill Response Vessel

Cathelco, part of Evac Group, has won an order to deliver marine growth prevention system (MGPS) for a new multi-purpose oil spill response and towage vessel being built for the Kuwait Oil Co.The system will be installed to prevent bio-fouling and corrosion in seawater pipework on the 60-meter vessel is currently under construction at the Uzmar Shipyard in Turkey with delivery scheduled for Q4 2020.The vessel will be equipped for towing services, area surveillance, offshore fire-fighting…

Partnership Creates spill Response 'One-Stop-Shop'

Norwegian suppliers Framo, Maritime Partner, Norbit Aptomar, and NorLense have come together to create the OSRV (Oil Spill Recovery Vessel) Group to offer a complete oil spill response solution. “Our aim is to be a one-stop-shop where we pool our efforts and act as a total systems supplier of safe, highly functional, and well-tested technology. The emergency response equipment has undergone thorough testing and quality assurance drawing on 40 years of oil spill response experience,” says Jørgen Brandt Theodorsen, Area Manager, Oil & Gas Pumping Systems, at Framo.

DryShips Posts Profit for 1Q

Greece-based DryShips Inc. (DRYS) reported first-quarter of 2016 net income of $55.4 million, after reporting a loss in the same period a year earlier. The company said it had profit of $2.05 per share. Losses, adjusted for non-recurring gains, came to 78 cents per share. Vessel impairment charges and loss on sales, of $40.8 million, or $1.53 per share. Net income pick-up from the Company's 40.4% ownership in Ocean Rig, of $116.5 million, or $4.36 per share. The operator of oil rigs and dry cargo carriers posted revenue of $11.9 million in the period. On April 11, 2016, the Company received notice of termination from Petroleo Brasileiro S.A. (Petrobras) of the contract for the oil spill recovery vessel Vega Inruda effective as of April 6, 2016.

Dryships Sinks Into Loss

DryShips Inc. (NASDAQ:DRYS), or DryShips or the Company, an international owner of drybulk carriers and offshore support vessels, today announced its unaudited financial and operating results for the quarter ended December 31, 2015. * For the fourth quarter of 2015, the Company reported a net loss of $527.6 million, or $0.79 basic and diluted loss per share. - Vessel impairment charges and non-cash losses, of $119.1 million, or $0.18 per share. - Non-cash write down of our investment in Ocean Rig of $310.5 million, or $0.47 per share. Excluding these impairment charges and losses, the Company’s net results would have amounted to a net loss of $98.0 million, or $0.14 per share. * The Company reported negative Adjusted EBITDA of $14.8 million for the fourth quarter of 2015.

Gobbler OSRV Harnesses Fire Suppression Tech

The new Gobbler Offshore 290 oil spill recovery vessel (OSRV) not only excels at remediation, but harnesses the latest in environmentally sound fire suppression technology, according to its developer. The boat comes standard with a Sea-Fire pre-engineered system and 3M's Novec 1230 Fire Protection Fluid. "We chose Novec 1230 because it's in line with Gobbler Boats' ethos of protecting the environment," said Simon Jauncey, Gobbler Boats' technical manager. 3M's next-generation fire suppression fluid is a replacement for Halon.

Metso Wins Major Automation Contracts for Advanced Ships

Metso has been awarded major automation system contracts for 3 advanced vessels to be built in Finland. One contract is for 2 Multifunctional Icebreaking Supply Vessels (MIBSV) by Arctech Helsinki Shipyard Oy for Russian Sovcomflot. The second is a Multipurpose Deck Cargo Carrier by STX Finland Oy for Finnish Gaiamare Ltd. belonging to Turku based Meriaura Group. The MIBSV’s are designated for the Sakhalin-1 Arkutun-Dagi gas field and will be used as supply vessels for the Exxon Neftegas Ltd gas platform. They are designed for the harsh environmental conditions in the Sakhalin area with drifting ice and temperatures down to minus 35°C.

CG Reports No Pollution, Navy Ship Grounding

U.S. Coast Guard and State of Hawaii pollution investigators determined this morning there is no threat of marine pollution after a U.S. Navy ship was freed from a grounding site off Honolulu International Airport's reef runway. The USS Port Royal ran aground a half mile off the runway Feb. 5 and was pulled free by the Navy. A Coast Guard air crew aboard an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter was airborne for an investigation at sunrise. Coast Guard and state pollution investigators aboard the HH-65 reported a sheen of approximately one mile by 100 yards wide.

Bow Mariner Update: Oil Recovery Ops Continue

According to the Coast Guard, the Marine Spill Response Corporation (MSRC) oil recovery vessel VIRGINIA RESPONDER began skimming operations, however, recoverable oil is widely dispersed and the amount recovered has been minimal to date. A helicopter has been flying throughout the day to locate patches of oil and direct the skimming vessel. The oil spill recovery vessel has been on-scene since Monday prepared to recover oil. Previous flights of the area located oil that was too spotty, patchy and widely dispersed to efficiently pick-up. On-scene conditions are favorable. During a Tuesday over flight, patches of oil were located in the area where the T/V BOW MARINER sank Saturday night.

Freight Ship Grounds Off Port Everglades

A Unified Command compromised of federal, state and vessel owner’s representatives are overseeing response operations to the grounding of the 600 foot bulk freight ship Federal Pescadores which was attempting to anchor outside Port Everglades, Fla. The Panamanian-flagged vessel was carrying cement, also has approximately 588 tons of bunker oil and 105 tons of diesel fuel onboard. Titan Maritime, LLC and its subcontractor Resolve Marine Group will focus on refloating the M/V Federal Pescadores at high tide, Sunday afternoon. Commercial salvage engineers began removing fuel oil from the vessel’s double bottom fuel tanks at approximately 11:40 a.m. today to mitigate any pollution risks prior to refloating the vessel. The fuel oil is being transferred to MSRC Barge 452.

Regional Report: Pacific Coast

Seattle's MARCO shipyard has been completing a rush job for Great Lakes Towing affiliate TUGZ International and is expected to have three new tractor tugs ready for christening by February 13. At the same time, the yard has just started to cut steel for two slightly larger tractors being built for San Francisco-based BayDelta. The latter will measure 105 ft. and will be powered by twin Caterpillar diesels of 4,400 combined hp driving Ulstein Z-drive units fitted with high-performance Nautican nozzles. Towing winches and headline winches will be provided by Burrard Iron Works Ltd of Vancouver, B.C. The three TUGZ boats, to be christened Z-Three, Z-Four and Z-Five, are 95-ft., and will also make use of Caterpillars turning Ulstein z-drives.
